Tansfeeq is ready to win but enthusiasm
has to be tempered by the thought of top-
weight in the nursery over five furlongs
of what will be demanding soft ground
conditions at Ffos Las today; veteran train-
er Barry Hills appears to have no qualms
about running Hamdan Al Maktoum s
thrice-raced Aqlaam gelding.
Way back in the 1970 s one introduced
a system which is now renowned world-
wide, top weights in nurseries on good, fast
As you can appreciate criteria is not met
as the surface could indeed anchor any two-
year-old carrying a welter burden and yet
Tansfeeq has only The Wispe as a time-
handicap danger; the latter is a mount of
champion jockey Richard Hughes and is
trained by Sprint King Robert Cowell!
What a conundrum, why should we both-
er?Might be best to leave the aforementioned
for information purposes and decide to
Split The Atom in the five-runner Maiden
two-year-old Stakes over a mile which
promises to be a marathon slog; Hughesy
is again involved!
Split The Atom has been placed three
times in five outings, he s definitely on the
upgrade and such experience could prove
advantageous with two newcomers and
once-raced Gold Prince, the one likely to
make a market..
There will be two places and a thieving
each-way double into Le Maitre Chat could
Le Maitre Chat is also one of five decs
in the concluding Maiden Stakes over 12
furlongs, ridden by Adam Kirby who returns
today after serving a nine-day(s) ban; he ll
be rarin to go!
Regular readers will be aware I m picking
for selections on what is a difficult day but,
there again, if it s tough for yours truly it
will be nigh impossible for other less expe-
Hopefully we l be able to solve an Identity
crisis in the Maiden Stakes over seven fur-
longs of soft Lingfield turf; why don t they
just race on their all-weather track 100%
when the surface is iffy?

The same old story?
Two horses trained by Barry Hills have been
named among a total of eight horses that tested
positive for morphine as the British Horseracing
Authority announced the disciplinary panel hear-
ing will take place on September 25.
The horses concerned are Soul Intent and Jolly
Red Jeanz, who failed drugs tests after winning at
Epsom and Chester respectively in July.
Veteran trainer Hills came out of retirement to
take over the running of his late son John s stables
after his death three months ago.
The BHA revealed that seven of the eight cases,
involving five trainers, were sufficiently similar to
be heard together.
The BHA is satisfied that the source of the positive
samples was a contaminated batch of feed and that
the trainers took all reasonable precautions to avoid
breaching the rules of racing.
No financial penalty will be imposed upon those
trainers involved, but their horses will be disqualified
from the relevant races.
The BHA confirmed the seven horses which
tested positive, the highest profile being The Queen s
Estimate, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, after she
finished second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
Russian Realm is the second horse trained by
Stoute caught up in the case.
The other horses are Tony Carroll s Ocean Legend,
Gay Kelleway s Royal Alcor and Strath Burn from
Charlie Hills stable.
The eighth case involves trainer Eve Johnson
While that is also related to feed contamination,
the BHA has said there are differences in the cir-
cumstances and this case will be heard separately
in due course.
Her horse is Charlie Wells, who tested positive
after winning at Chepstow in June.
The BHA has not ruled out the possibility of
further positive samples of morphine being detected,
but said there are currently no indications of any
additional positive samples.
Feed suppliers Dodson & Horrrell have undertaken
a full investigation into the case.
Reel deal in Champagne frame
Investec Derby favourite Highland Reel features

Races Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on September
13.The Aidan O Brien-trained youngster was second
on his debut at Leopardstown and won his maiden
by 12 lengths at Gowran before impressing in the
Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
A powerful Ballydoyle team also includes the
smart-looking Gleneagles, winner of the Futurity
Stakes at the Curragh. Richard Hannon has five
possibles, among them Superlative Stakes scorer
Estidhkaar and Vintage second Tupi.
Other notables include Chesham Stakes hero
Richard Pankhurst (John Gosden) and Acomb Stakes
winner Dutch Connection (Charlie Hills).
Native fired up for Bullet
Veteran sprinter Kingsgate Native will bid to get
off the mark of the campaign in the Betfred Beverley
Bullet on Saturday.
Winner of the Nunthorpe in 2007 and the Golden
Jubilee at Royal Ascot the following year, Kingsgate
Native is in the twilight of his career as a nine-
year-old, but has run consistently well in defeat
for trainer Robert Cowell this season.
His latest effort, when eighth in the King George
Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, was perhaps his
most disappointing run of the year, but Cowell
believes he will better suited by the tougher test
presented by Beverley.
This time last year I looked at John Gos-
den s record in the European Wealth
Solario Stakes and his record in the race
is more relevant than ever.
Twelve months ago Kingman was the
promising young colt representing the New-
market handler in Saturday s Group Three
at Sandown but there was, arguably, more
attention on his rider James Doyle who was
having his first ride for his new retainer.
We are set for another first this weekend
with Richard Pankhurst s jockey sporting
new silks since the colt slammed the field
in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot
Like Kingman, Richard Pankhurst had
received positive mentions from our Catch-
ing Pigeons column prior to his racecourse
debut at Newmarket but unlike Kingman
he fluffed his lines - although he set the
record straight in no uncertain terms next
Last year s article can be found by clicking
here but a brief recap is that Gosden has
won the race with four of his five runners
since 2002, including with top-class pair
Kingman and Raven s Pass (sire of Richard
Pankhurst), and the interest in the perform-
ance of Richard Pankhurst is immediately
Gosden s post Chesham remark that it s
very exciting as the man who led this horse
up and looks after him rode Raven s Pass
every day may not necessarily mean that
the two runners should be mentioned in
the same breath but it could equally be sig-
nificant that he did do so despite the family
The form of his debut run (which you
can watch here) worked out averagely well
with several runners achieving ratings in
the 90s while those immediately behind
him in the Chesham have done their bit to
uphold the form of the Listed contest.

Toscanini and Dick Whittington---second
and third respectively---met again in the
Group Three Anglesey Stakes with the latter
coming out on top by half-a-length and
Aidan O Brien s colt then followed up in
the Group One Phoenix Stakes.
The fourth home, Nafaqa, has won his
only subsequent start while the eighth and
twelfth home have also won, albeit in less
exalted company but the latter was beaten
over 15 lengths by the winner who William
Buick described as by far the best horse in
the race .
It remains to be seen whether he is the
best horse in Saturday s race but he does
set the standard although there s enough
depth in the entries to believe that we should
be granted a better guide to his abilities.
Aktabantay, Cock of the North and Mister
Universe were all behind Estidkhaar in the
Superlative Stakes at Newmarket.
