weight ratio, and low weight is essential
for high-performance automobile racing.

become the best material for many ap-
plications. One example of a racing in-
dustry that deals with a huge amount of
this material is Formula One. It is the top
of its class among racing cars. The nor-
mal high speed it could achieve is 360
km/hr and its engine revving up to a limit
of 18,000 rpm. Due to its needed per-
formance, Formula One cars need a
great amount of carbon fiber composites
to support its chassis. The material helps
the car to maintain its strength and
being extremely stiff, yet at the same
time, rendering it light. Many high end
car dealers have opted to incorporate
carbon fiber technology in vehicle design.
Porsche believes that carbon compos-
ites will be a growing force in the auto-
motive industry, and values the
experience gained with the low-volume
Carrera GT. With the exception of the
front and rear bumpers and a few other
small parts, all of the Porsche Carrera
GT's exterior panels, including doors,
trunk lid, hood and two-piece roof, are
made of carbon fiber composites. Euro-
pean carmakers such as Lamborghini,
Ferrari, Bentley and McLaren made car-
bon-fiber composites the standard for
high-end supercars. Now they're taking
carbon fiber even further, creating new
ways to reduce moulding time and get
more of the material into structural
The new thrust, said Stephan Winkel-
mann, CEO of Lamborghini, is part of an
effort to slash weight and push perform-
ance. "The Sesto Elemento shows how
the future of the super sports car can
look," Winkelmann said. "Extreme light-
weight engineering, combined with ex-
treme performance, results in extreme
driving fun. It is our abilities in carbon-
fiber technology that have facilitated
such a forward-thinking concept."
Since the success of incorporating car-
bon fiber technology to racing cars has
garnered immeasurable popularity, the
same technology is now being applied to
mainstream cars. As a result, we can
enjoy benefits to safer roads, thanks to
this new technology. Japenese firm, Tei-
jin Limited, said in a press release it can
mould an automobile frame of carbon
fiber reinforced plastic in under 60 sec-
onds. "The breakthrough overcomes one
of the biggest challenges in the industry
and represents a long stride toward the
use of carbon fiber for the mass produc-
tion of automobiles and other products,"
the company's statement said. The
company said it has developed an elec-
tric vehicle to show the advantages of
its new carbon fiber composite. The
frame of the vehicle weighs only 47 kilo-
grams (103 pounds), a fifth of what a
metal counterpart would weigh, it said.
There are little if any disadvantages of
carbon fiber technology. Cost is the
main hurdle carbon fiber will have to
overcome as it is expensive to produce.
It is also difficult to recycle because the
recycled form is not strong enough to
produce another car. The future outlook
for this technology seems bright since
replacement of half of the ferrous met-
als in current automobiles reduces a ve-
hicle's weight by 60 percent and its fuel
consumption by 30 percent. The result-
ing gains in fuel efficiency would reduce
greenhouse gas and other emissions by
about 10 percent to 20 percent. Why not
