My name is Marilyn Mohan and I
am a single mother.
I m from Princes Town. Lothian s
Rd, to be exact. I grow up in a family
of nine children and I m the last, the
baby girl and the spoilt one. I grew up
in a very humble home. We may not
have had money but we always had
sharing and family togetherness. All
my brothers and sisters have their own
house and everything is much better
now. And we all live in the same Loth-
ian s Rd.
I went to primary school at Princes
Town Presbyterian Number One. I was
baptized into Presbyterian in order to
get into the church school. I go to Pen-
tecostal church now because it s more
convenient but I still go to my Pres-
byterian church once it s affordable.
I started working at the age of 15,
while still at school, at a sports store.
My brother used to play cricket and he
knew somebody who used to run the
store, so that is how I end up getting
I just love designing interior dec-
orating. What couch to buy, what cur-
tains will match. I do all the show win-
dows at my current job. But I never
learned to do it from anybody. I just
have the knack for it.
I got involved with a fashion design-
er once. Things was going good in the
beginning and then things just went,
and everybody just went their separate
ways. That was approximately 20 years
ago. And my daughter is 20. So that
was my daughter s father. She was just
11 months when we separated. My boss-
es, where I still work now, were very,
very helpful to me. They even took me
into their home, until I was able to
decipher what it was I wanted to do.
I will be eternally grateful for that. With
the assistance of my bosses, I was able
to get my own place.
I decided I brought my daughter
into this world and I was going to
bring her up in it on my own. Since
her father and I separated, we don t
have any kind of contact. But his moth-
er and sisters and I are very close. He
is the onliest person in the family I
don t have any affiliation with. But I
never ill-speak him in front of my
daughter. At the end of the day, that
is still her father.
I struggle on my own and my
daughter, Christianna, is a well
brought up child, she have manners.
She s not a child like to wear naked
clothes. She will dress appropriate for
My daughter has had two grannies
in her life: a granny we started living
by and her true grandmother. Both of
them, Granny Nell and Granny Yvonne,
were a foundation in her life.
Christianna went Bishops and was
accepted to do civil engineering at UWI.
She s now going into her second year.
Christianna told me, when she was
eight years old, "Mummy, one day I
will be the CEO of a company. And I
will come to you and say, Take this
money and decorate how you want".
I always teach my daughter growing
up, whatever I give you is the best.
Never look at what anybody else have.
I want to tell all single mothers they
don t have to depend on nobody. Never
let anybody feel they better than you.
Work towards your goals, don t depend
on men. The day will come when you
will reap that rewards.
My daughter and I are very, very
close. But, if she have to go, I am will-
ing to let her. At the end of the day,
she can t be clinging on to me.
I m not the kind of person to jump
into relationship and relationship and
relationship. I never wanted my daugh-
ter to have "Uncles".
The best part of being a single
mother is the joy and pride of seeing
your child grow. When she got her
first [Secondary school Entrance
Assessment examination] choice for
Bishop s, that is when I cry.
