We never find out his name but he stands as a
lone representation of so many who've lost their
way. Hidden Avenue, directed by Trinidadian
Filmmaker, Daniel Ahye portrays the central
character as an honest young man, trapped in a
dishonest and corrupt society. Well intentioned,
the man is a member of a charity organization
and watches helplessly as unsavory team mem-
bers make off with a great deal of the donations.
Through a spoken-word style voice over, the
young man laments his choice to turn a blind eye;
reflecting the moral battle within all of us and
how doing the right thing isn't always that sim-

Trinidad Folklore and superb special-effects join
forces in this fabled short film. NOKA: Keeper of
Worlds, directed by Shaun Escayg, a Trinidadian
writer and director based in LA, is filled with fan-
tasia and things that go bump in the night -- all
tinged with local nuances.
Gabriel is an eight-year-old boy dealing with the
sudden loss of his beloved grandfather. We learn
that aside from his grief he is also battling the
demon of mental illness - a rare form of schizo-
phrenia that he allegedly inherited from said
grandfather. His mother (played by Trinidadian
actress, Kerri Tucker-Lazzari) is struggling with
the decision of medicating her son for his condi-
tion. All relatable occurrences, save for the myste-
rious, shadowy figure in the woods that appears
to Gabriel, claiming he's not sick but in fact pos-
sesses supernatural powers and is a liaison be-
tween worlds, as was his grandfather. We follow
Gabriel through this extraordinary adventure of
discovery and self-empowerment.
The special effects in this film are spectacular
and indeed, Escayg, whose debut short film; Fish
(ttff/12) won several awards, has a vast back-
ground in this area. His special effects skills have
allowed him to work on several major movies, in-
cluding: Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon and
most recently, The Last of Us.

A profound line from Troop 491, a feature film di-
rected by Praheme; an American filmmaker based

Boy Scouts hoping for a more positive influence.
Stuck between two worlds, Tristan wrestles with
doing the right thing, whatever that might be.

Jamaican director Nile Saulter's films have an air
of intimate grandeur---with emotional and poignant
narratives. He goes for enlightenment. His short
documentary film, Pillowman is no different.
Leonard Smith, an artisan pillow maker and seller
in Kingston, Jamaica has become a familiar figure
to Kingstonians over the last 30 years. Moody
scenes of his daily routine coupled with a thick pat-
ois voice-over, tell the story of his life and offer up
some unforgettable mantras for moving forward.
The film also highlights the important role a pil-
low plays in our relationships. "It's such an intimate
thing, so I wondered who would want to reach out
of their car and buy pillows," Saulter said. "I wanted
to know what that guy's house looked like, what
his process was like."
Nile Saulter is a founding member of the New
Caribbean Cinema collective. His short films have
been exhibited at the British Museum, the Michael
Werner Gallery and the Grace Exhibition Space in
New York. He has also directed and co-directed
music videos for Bounty Killer and Skygrass.
