1. Tell us about this year's theme for the band. How is it different from what
have you been doing before?
Over the last three years we took the masquerader on a movement. We started
in water (Water Seas of Consciousness) then took the masquerader onto land
(Human Race) and finally into air (Vie -- The Rise of the Sanctuary). For 2015, the
masquerader is moving into Space, through our theme M3 -- Millennia Three: The
Long Walk from Home.
Millennia III represents a future filled with evolutionary possibilities. In our story,
one's future is predicated on one's experience and one's outlook to those events.
The reality is that each of life's experiences (whether good or bad) has the power
to drive positive personal growth or impede, potentially decay development.
Incidentally, the way in which one chooses to respond to those events, will possi-
bly shape one's future.
There are five sections in the band. Each section represents different
planets/star with each planet/star being analogous to a different life experience /
challenge. It is through walking through each of these personal experiences, some-
times stepping outside of one's comfort zone that one builds his/her future.
Although the journey may be daunting, if one chooses to look at each experience
as growing lessons, milestone, one has just taken the first step to crafting a
In terms showcasing a different element in costuming design we used quite a
bit a PU / leatherette with mesh inserts throughout the entire band. This was not
a fabric that we have experimented with before. However, it married itself beauti-
fully to our futuristic theme. We also choose printed snake fabrics to add more
depth to the designs. With respect to the males, we attempted to give our men a
modern-military-edge through the use of our jogger pants and motor styled jack-
ets. Our women on the other hand have a wider range of options from chiffon
dresses paired with pants to jumpers.
We will also be releasing an Audible Book. In this regard we are trying to add a
fresh layer to the brand. This will be a unique way of storytelling in the Carnival
fraternity. The Audible book will walk you through the life experience of two char-
acters and highlight how each of their decisions impacts their future.
2. Describe the process of taking an idea and making it a piece of art.
The process is two-fold: (i) Developing the storyboard and (ii) creating the cos-
tumes to portray the storyline.
From the narrative angle, much of our work is driven from personal experience.
Funny enough, it is a sort of deep-dive into our minds and experiences. Each year
we try to bring to the forefront issues and themes that are universal; topics that
others can relate too. This aspect of the brand is very important to us as our mas-
queraders consists of an audience who gravitate not just to the detailing of the
costumes but to the story that we try to tell. So while we will admit that it is a
challenge to create a new storyline every year, at the end of the day the process is
very therapeutic for both Kathy and I. Interestingly, it gives us an opportunity to
reflect on our lives, our journey and think about the path that we are trying to cre-
ate for ourselves.
With respect to the costuming, we testify that it is a very difficult process.
Traditionally we start with a sketch and then attempt to bring those designs to
life. Ultimately there is a lot is trial and error and the prototyping cost is quite high
year-on-year. But the glory of the process is seeing it all come together.
