Westhoughton has an excellent opportu-
nity of getting off the mark in the Maiden
2-y-o Stakes over six furlongs of good to
firm Ayr today, ninth time lucky?
That should be the case unless there is an
above average Northern-trained newcomer
because consistent, hitherto luckless West-
houghton, placed five times, has time-handicap
marks that win this-type race nine times out
Latest efforts of the David O Meara-trained
Equiano colt have been particularly creditable,
in nurseries at Musselburgh/Beverley, and a
replication of either ought to suffice.
Whereas so many label maiden juveniles
when they run well, get placed and continually
come up short I m partial to getting the day
right; after all you can t beat experience and
Westhoughton will benefit from his and prob-
ably put it to good use.
Never force the issue when betting horses
seriously, "let the ball come onto the bat"
instead of chasing.
Running tandem with this eight-race pro-
gramme will be jumping, Chepstow/Sedgefield
prior to the Monday-nighter (under flood-
lights!) at Wolverhampton where both Cas-
cading Stars and Madam Midnight appeal in
both juvenile races.
Cascading Stars should prove a solid each-
way betting proposition in the opening Maiden
Stakes (if all eight decs run!) and Madam Mid-
night doesn t need to improve on a promising
debut against four rivals in the Maiden Fillies
Stakes over an extended mile of the Tapeta
surface which, incidentally, is still riding slow-
ish according to jockey feedback.

well-bred filly, Singoalia, against Madam Mid-

Connections of Treve were
pleased to see some rain fall in
Paris on Monday ahead of her
bid to retain her Qatar Prix de
l Arc de Triomphe crown at
Longchamp on Sunday.
The Criquette Head-Maarek-
trained filly was an impressive
winner of Europe s premier mid-
dle-distance prize last October
but has had her fair share of prob-
lems since then and has yet to hit
the heights in any of her three
starts this year.
However, she is reported to have
done everything right since her
latest run in the Prix Vermeille,
when she was fourth to Baltic
"Treve is in good form. They
had rain in Paris today, so the
more of that the better as far as
making it good or on the easier
side of good, which would suit
her best," said Harry Herbert,
manager to owners Al Shaqab
"They have had a little bit of
rain and it all helps, but Criquette
reports her to be very well and
fingers crossed we re nearly there.
"There s no way I ve lost faith
in her. If she gets her ground and
she will have needed the run last
time as well---hopefully she will
go to the Arc spot on."
Al Shaqab have an equally
strong contender as part-owners
in the Elie Lellouche-trained Ectot,
who burst into the picture with
a smart performance to win the
Prix Niel on his first try at a mile
and a half after a five-month lay-
"Ectot worked this morning and
did it very nicely. It was his last
gentle piece before the weekend,"
"I thought it was a bold move
to run him over a mile and a half
by Elie first time after a lay-off.
"It said a lot about the horse.
He was very impressive and will
come on a lot for that run, obvi-
ously, match-fitness wise.
"He showed a terrific turn of
foot. I was impressed."
Meanwhile one time Prix de
l Arc de Triomphe favourite Sea
The Moon is set to stand at Lan-
wades Stud near Newmarket.
The Markus Klug-trained three-
year-old catapulted himself to the
top of the betting for this Sunday s
Paris showpiece with a virtuoso
display in the German Derby but
he was retired after picking up an
injury on his only subsequent
The colt, who is from the first
crop of Sea The Stars, was unbeat-
en in his first four outings prior
to finishing second to Ivanhowe
in the Longines Grosser Preis von
Baden and it was subsequently
discovered that he had suffered a
recurrence of an injury sustained
during his classic triumph.
"He made such a huge impres-
sion on everybody when winning
the German Derby, and we feel
that he will be a very popular sire
indeed," Lanwades owner Kirsten
Rausing said in a statement.
"He is a beautiful colt and so
closely resembles the magnificent
Sea The Stars, who has made such
an extraordinary impact at stud
this year. As he is out of a Monsun
full sister to Samum, he represents
a fantastic outcross option for
many European breeders."
His fee will be £15,000 and he
will be partially syndicated, with
breeder Gestut Goerlsdorf retain-
ing an interest.
ELMONT---Imperia, second in his lone
previous start, closed from sixth to win
the Grade 3 Pilgrim for two-year-olds on
the turf on Sunday at Belmont Park.
Comfortable racing off the pace through
an opening half-mile in 48.98 seconds,
Imperia came off the rail approaching the
five-sixteenths pole and entered the stretch
in fourth before he was put to a drive by
jockey Javier Castellano. With each stride
Imperia gained on Vision Perfect, taking
the lead 50 yards from the wire en route
to a one-length victory.
The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:41.36.
Imperia, off as the 5-1 third choice, paid
$13.Castellano replaced Rajiv Maragh, who
was named to ride Imperia but was injured
in a spill yesterday at Belmont.
"I got lucky today with the way every-
thing unfolded," said Castellano. "I didn t
have a horse in the race, and Kiaran asked
me to ride him this morning. I had a beau-
tiful trip. He broke well, much better than
Offering Plan finished third and was fol-
lowed by 1-2 favourite Startup Nation, Face
the Music, Strong Coffee, All I Karabout,
Nutty Futty, and Artie s Flight.
In his debut, Imperia was second, beaten
a neck by Face the Music, on August 23 at
Saratoga Race Course. Imperia raced with
Lasix for the first time in the Pilgrim.
Imperia, a Godolphin Racing homebred,
is by Medaglia d Oro and out of Cocoa
Beach, who won the Grade 1 Beldame on
the dirt and Grade 1 Matriarch on the turf
and was second in the Grade 1 Breeders
Cup Ladies Classic on a synthetic surface.
Imperia has earned $139,600, including
$120,000 for his Pilgrim victory.
Rain fillip for Treve Arc challenge
ELMONT---Highly regarded two-year-
old filly Lady Eli ran to the reputation she
had earned during training hours yester-
day afternoon at Belmont Park, taking
the Grade 3, $200,000 Miss Grillo at 1
1/16 miles on the Widener turf course
with a devastating late kick.
Trained by Chad Brown for Sheep Pond
Partners, Lady Eli opened up at 3-5 and
was sent off at 6-5 in her debut on August
25 at Saratoga Race Course, which she won
by a nose despite being stymied for much
of the stretch. In the Miss Grillo, she was
backed at 7-2, which she made look like

Irad Ortiz, Jr, tracked a dawdling early pace
set by Greywalls of 25.47 seconds for the
opening quarter-mile, 51.48 for the half,

inevitable sprint for home commenced,
Lady Eli dashed to the front and drew away

"(Lady Eli) had trained like a horse with
a ton of ability; that s why she opened up

your career two-for-two, as impressive as
those races have been, is great. You can t
