Chelsea says in a statement that Courtois
was "treated for a minor cut to his ear and
was released from hospital" late Sunday,
adding that "he is expected to report for inter-
national duty later this week."
Courtois played on after receiving treatment
following the collision but was later substi-
tuted. New rules introduced by the English
Football Association say a player must be
removed from the field if there is a suspicion
David Villa says he's fit
for A-League debut
MELBOURNE---Spanish striker David Villa
says he s fit to make his debut in Australian
football s A-League on Saturday after a four
months break since his last match.
The 32-year-old Villa, Spain s leading inter-
national goal-scorer, trained for the first time
Monday with his Melbourne City teammates
after joining the club on a ten-match loan.
Villa last played when Spain beat Australia
3-0 in the group stage of the World Cup in
June, but told a news confernce in Melbourne
he has worked with his conditioning team
and is ready to make his A-League debut

Pirlo replaces Bonaventura
in Italy squad
FLORENCE---Andrea Pirlo has been called up to the
Italy squad for the upcoming European Championship
qualifying matches as a replacement for the injured
Pirlo had announced before the World Cup this sum-
mer that he would quit playing for the national team
after the tournament. However, the Juventus midfielder
reversed his decision when Antonio Conte took charge
of the Azzurri, telling his former club coach he would
be available for selection.
The 35-year-old Pirlo returned to action on Sunday
after more than a month out with a hip injury.
Bonaventura reported to the Italy camp with a right
thigh injury and the Milan midfielder withdrew from
the squad after tests early yesterday afternoon.
Italy hosts Azerbaijan in Palermo on Friday, before
making a short trip to visit Malta three days later.
Knee injury forces
Coentrao out of Portugal games
LISBON---Fabio Coentrao will miss Portugal s upcom-
ing games against France and Denmark because of
a left knee injury.
In Coentrao s absence, Malaga defender Antunes
will likely make his ninth appearance.
Portugal plays France in a friendly on Saturday and
meets Denmark in a European Championship qualifier
three days later.
The Portuguese are eager to get back on track under
new coach Fernando Santos after losing their first Euro
2016 qualifier to Albania at home 1-0.
Injured Holebas out for
ATHENS---Greece defender Jose Holebas has been
ruled out of European Championship qualifiers against
Finland and Northern Ireland after picking up a groin
injury in a weekend Serie A match.
The 30-year-old left winger, a World Cup standout
for Greece this year, has been replaced by Kostas Gian-
noulis of Olympiakos.
Holebas, who moved to Roma this season, was hurt
in Sunday s 3-2 loss at Juventus.
It is the second injury substitution since Greece
announced its squad to face Group F rivals Finland on
Saturday and Northern Ireland three days later. Defender
Avraam Papadopoulos is out because of a cheekbone
injury, while Udinese midfileder Panagiotis Kone is
Greece lost its group opener to Romania 1-0 at home.
Conte plays down dropping Balotelli
FLORENCE---Italy coach Antonio Conte has played
down his exclusion of Liverpool forward Mario
Balotelli for upcoming European Championship qual-
Since transferring to Liverpool from AC Milan after
the World Cup, Balotelli has yet to score in five appear-
ances in the Premier League and was also left off last
month s Italy squad.
Conte says "he started on a new path, it s not easy.
