York Film Critics Circle
named Richard Linklater s
Boyhood best film of the
year, while the Gotham In-
dependent Film Awards
plumped for Birdman.
Both films feature on the
National Board of Review s
2014 Top 10, that also in-
cludes such films as The Im-
itation Game, Gone Girl and
The Lego Movie.

Christmas is a time for giving, and I firmly believe a gift from your kitchen
is truly a gift from your heart. So this year why not try to bake up a few
batches of festive cookies and give them out as Christmas gifts.
MINI STEWED COCONUT TURNOVERS
Cheese pastry crust
2 cups flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
2 ozs cream cheese
Combine all dry ingredients; rub in butter then
cream cheese to fine crumbs.
Add milk and gently knead, refrigerate to firm up.
Roll out to 12 by eight-inch rectangle.
Cut into three-inch squares.
Place about one teaspoon of filling onto the
lower half, fold over and seal to make a triangular

Dust generously with powdered sugar.
2 cups freshly grated coconut
2 cups granulated sugar

In a medium-sized saucepan, add coconut and
sugar, cook on medium heat until mixture begins to
bubble, the mixture should water a little.
Add spices and continue cooking stirring
frequently until mixture comes together, about ten
to 15 minutes.
You can add a small amount of water if needed
to prevent sticking.
Remove coconut when it is cooked and still juicy.
Do not dry your mixture out.
SUGARED FRUIT SHORTBREAD
1 cup dried fruit, raisins and currants
2 tbs rum or grape juice
1 cup unsalted butter
2/3 cup icing sugar, sifted
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup coarse-grained golden sugar
Wash and dry fruit, place in a bowl and add rum,
Let macerate for about one hour.
Chop fruit finely in a food processor.
Cream butter with icing sugar, add salt and flour.
Mix well, add fruit and combine.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently
knead to a uniform texture.
Divide into two pieces. Roll each into a seven-
inch log, wrap tightly in plastic wrap.
Chill for about two hours.
Preheat oven to 350˚F
Place golden sugar into a plate.
Slice cookies 1/4 inch thick; roll in the sugar,
covering the ends only.
Place on cookie sheets one inch apart
Bake for 15 minutes. Remove and cool on racks.

JAMMIE BUTTER COOKIES
1 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

In a large bowl, cream butter with sugar, add

Add to butter mixture and stir until combined.
Refrigerate dough for about one hour.

Stamp out 2 1/2 inch circles.
