"BE FEARLESS...you have more power within you than you really think or can
imagine. Use that power to realise your true potential, and then teach your children
to do the same." So says Marlene Davidson, author of Get Up! The Sun is Out! and
Caribbean Drinks 4 Life.
Davidson, a 37-year-old Tobagonian, targets single parents with Get Up!, and her
second book, Caribbean Drinks 4 Life, targets local wine, punch, and juice blend
Asked what gave her the extra push to write Get Up! (a compilation of inspira-
tional quotes for single mothers), she related, "I conceptualized it after dealing with
a minor bout of depression. Having to deal with the many stresses of life, and bal-
ancing varying roles and responsibilities became quite overwhelming. During that
time, words of inspiration from varying sources helped to give me the extra moti-
vation needed to get out of bed daily. Compiling those quotes in a book was just
my way of helping other single mothers/parents who might be going through
The holder of a BSc in Hotel Management and MSc in Entrepreneurship and Busi-
ness Management, Davidson spoke about her second book. "Caribbean Drinks
contains a wide variety of recipes for juice blends, punches, liqueurs, wines, and
teas that are indigenous to the Caribbean people. The essence of the book is also
to highlight the nutritional content of the fruits and vegetables used to create the
unique and tasty concoctions. The thought process behind the book was to pro-
vide readers with the opportunity to appreciate the nutritional value of our
Caribbean fruits and vegetables, and the refreshing drinks that can be made with
While she worked on Get Up! for about one year, the author disclosed that
Caribbean Drinks contains recipes for drinks that she has been making for most of
her adult life. "Other recipes came from friends and family members, who have
been around for much longer than I have," she laughed.
Davidson's talent has not gone unnoticed. She is a 2013 Idea 2 Innovation (i2i)
awardee for her submission of a Caribbean Diabetic Cooking Show, now called
Caribbean Cooking 4 Life. In addition, she received an award from the Tobago Cul-
tural Committee for Innovation. The response to both her books is tremendous.
"Many of my friends and family with Amazon accounts have already downloaded
both books to their smart phones and kindle devices," she pointed out. "Not only
do they love the books, but they have been inspired to write and publish their
Who gives this woman the inspiration to keep "getting up" and moving? She smil-
ingly admitted, "My son is my main source of inspiration. The fact that God has en-
trusted me with the awesome responsibility of taking care of another human
being is a humbling and rewarding experience."
So what does Davidson do besides writing? The answer to that is -- many things!
She manufactures gourmet (ginger and coconut) granola under the brand 'Nola',
Tobago's Gourmet Granola and traditional/flavoured benne balls. She works in
Business Development at the Ministry of Tobago Development, is a Director on
the Tourism Development Company (TDC) Board, is a part-time Entrepreneurship
lecturer at the Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute (THTI), and holds one
more post that she boasts of -- a full-time single-parent.
With so many titles, one would wonder if she has time to do any more. Amazingly
she does; she plans to write more books. "After being bitten by the writing/publish-
ing bug, I have intentions of pursuing other book projects," Davidson related. "I love
cooking and eating, so I will pursue more projects along those lines."
Asked who she would like to thank for getting her this far, the author stated, "I
want to thank God for my talents and abilities, and for choosing me to be a
mother and parent to a wonderful son; my mother and immediate family for their
continuous support, and my friends who continue to provide words of encourage-
ment, especially when I post my books for sale on Facebook!"
Davidson's books are available on Amazon.com in digital (kindle) format.
