D Abadie Youths I blew the race for the
Championship Division title in the the
National Table Tennis League wide open
when it swept host and current leader Uni-
versity of T&T 3-0 at Corinth Campus,
San Fernando on Tuesday.
Issa Baisden got the better of Davone
Joseph 12-10, 11-9, 12-10; Sherdon Pierre
overcame Kamal Hunte 12-10, 11-6, 9-11,
11-6 and Ronald Williams defeated Isiah
Welch 11-8, 5-11, 11-4, 11-8 to complete the
upset and saw it climbed to third with a
14-4 record and 36 points, the same as
PowerGen (16-4) while UTT lead with 37
from a 16-5 mark.
The quartet of Guaya D ream Team (13-
8), Arima Hawks (13-5), Montrose United
(11-8) and Himalaya Tough Guys (11-5) with
34, 33, 30 and 28 points respectively are
still in the fray.
On Monday, PowerGen and UTT both
won, 3-1 over D Abadie Youths II at the
D Abadie Community Centre, Arouca on
PowerGen got off to a less than auspicious
start with Catherine Spicer going under to
D Abadie s Edwin Humphreys 10-12, 12-14,
But that was the only bit of joy for the
host club as Rod Singh gop the visitors level
via his 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 victory over
Daveon Humphreys before Richard Copeland
humbled Daryl Rampersad 11-4, 10-12, 9-
11, 11-5, 14-12, and Spicer redeemed herself
by beating Daveon Humphreys 11-9, 11-5,
11-4 to seal a 3-1 trumph.
Joseph won the opener for UTT, 11-5, 11-
9, 14-12 over Humphreys (D), only for Edwin
to rally past Welch, 11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 11-
6 to draw D Abadie II even at 1-1.
Hunte outclassed Rampersad 13-11, 11-
8, 11-5 and Joseph battled past Edwin 11-
9, 11-3, 12-14, 11-3 to secure UTT s win.
Browne suits up tonight
for hockeymen warm-up
England-based T&T men s hockey standout,
Kwandwane Browne will suit for the senior men s
team tonight when they face a President s XI in a
practice match at the National Hockey Centre,
Tacarigua, from 6.30pm tonight.
The match will serve as the lone fixture of a camp
hosted by the T&T Hockey Board from Monday last
until tomorrow in preparation fo the FIH World
Hockey League Round Two qualifiers set for Chula
Vista, San Diego, California, USA from February 28
to March 8.
In California, the T&T hockeymen, silver medal
winners at last November s Central American and
Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mexico, will compete
against USA, Russia and Canada in one pool while
Austria, Chile, Ireland and Italy are in the other
At the end of the round-robin, the teams will meet
in cross-over quarterfinal matches followed by semi-
finals, third place and final playoffs.
Browne, an English high performance hockey coach
and English national teams assistant coach is making
a return to the squad after missing out on the FIH
round one qualifiers in Jamaica where T&T emerged
victorious and also the CAC Games.
Also in the squad for this practice match is the
attacking duo of Mickell Pierre and TTHB "Player
of the Year" Akim Toussaint, veterans Solomon Eccles
and Dwain Quan Chan, "Youth Player of the Year"
Tariq Marcano and "Goalkeeper of the Year" Andrey
Browne last played on home soil three years ago
and is excited but pressured at the same time as he
is also here in a coaching capacity for both the senior
men and women squads.
The former Notre Dame captaim said, "It s quite
exciting to be with the guys and excited that the
young players catch on so quickly to new skills and
drills. With young players there is always the need
to provide challenges for them so that they can be
stretched to their full potential."
He added, "Players must also find ways to see
beyond just making a national team, and towards
being the best in the world. At a young age that was
my goal, watching international players like India s
Dhanraj Pillay, gave me that drive to be the best."
Guaya Dream Team blanked Central Warriors 3-
0 to go third with 32 points and a 13-6 record, two
ahead of Hawks which is 13-4 after edging Guaya
Also on Monday night at the Carenage Community
Centre, Haig Street, host club, Carenage Blasters
blanked Solo Crusaders 3-0.
For the winners Luc O Young downed Kwame
Lawrence 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-4; Joshua Maxwell out-
played Richard Young 11-3, 11-6, 12-10 and Nigel
Morgan beat N Kosi Rouse 11-8, 11-6, 11-5.
