Soca may be synonymous with
Carnival, but not every party enthu-
siast can stand the monotony of the
season s handful of hits on constant
rotation at all fetes.
Those seeking a blend of popular
music genres without compromising
on the electrifying vibe of a Carnival
fete as well as members of the ever
growing community of dire-hard
ravers in T&T, can now turn to the
annual Momentum Carnival music
The event, in its second year and
which features a mix of four gen-
res---dancehall, electronic dance
music (EDM), hip hop and of course
soca---will be held next Thursday at
O2 Park in Chaguaramas.
International headline acts sched-
uled to perform are acclaimed United
States (US) house DJ Borgeous, EDM
collective Cash Cash, Jamaican
dancehall producer/singer Russian
and hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd, who
will be supported by a cast of over
a dozen local and regional DJs. Soca
artists Bunji Garlin and Machel Mon-
tano are also carded to perform.
While the event will be a mash-
up the popular music genres, its pro-
moter, D Movement, has promised
to keep the focus on soca.
In keeping with its ethos of pro-
moting the local art form interna-
tionally by marrying it with main-
stream EDM, the promoter has
required all international acts to fuse
one of their hits with a popular 2015
"Momentum is trying to position
itself as the event that brings in for-
eign artistes to learn about Carnival
and incorporate our cultural nuances
into its music and simultaneously
help our local artist through collab-
oration," the promoter said in a media
D Movement has also included
a competition where local up-and-
coming DJs are invited to create
an EDM remix of a 2015 soca hit,
which will be played at the event.
Prospective candidates can sub-
mit their entries via the event s
Facebook page, with the winner
Depending on its success the pro-
moter is planning to make compe-
tition, which it has billed as a DJ
equivalent to already established Soca
Monarch and Chutney Soca Monarch
competitions, an annual event coin-
ciding with the festival.
"Presently, our local soca artistes
do a great job promoting our music
that is appreciated at home, but the
DJs will be responsible for acceler-
ating the international success for
local music," the release said.
However, the promoter is still
seeking corporate and Government
support in their initiative.
"Trinidad s vulnerability to fluc-
tuating oil prices is a further cry to
diversify the economy and find other
forms of non-oil related export com-
modities, Momentum has the answer.
Trinidad has the potential to export
its music more so than ever before,
due to the changing music land-
scape," it said in the release.
The event will be split into two
sections Platinum and Courtyard,
with the former offering closer prox-
imity to the stage and the latter
allowing patrons to enter with cool-
ers.Tickets initially started at $300
for Courtyard and $400 for Platinum,
with periodic increases weekly. Prices
on online ticket agent O2ticket.com
stood at $340 and $450 respectively,
up to late yesterday.
Patrons, who do not wish to drive
to and from the event, can access a
shuttle service from locations Trinci-
ty, Chaguanas and San Fernando, at
a cost of $50.
