Iam only one among the
hundreds and perhaps thou-
sands of university gradu-
ates who are employed in posi-
tions where we feel like
intellectual misfits. It is either
that we are hired in an area that
starkly contrasts with the field in
which we have spent years of
academic pursuit, and/or we are
placed in positions where our
capabilities are undervalued and
our potential remain untapped.
Many graduates are hired as
technical officers at various gov-
ernment agencies; however they
end up doing administrative and
boondoggle work and, in the
process, time and resources are
wasted in the name of doing
work or "appearing to do work."
I am currently fulfilling my
three-year contractual obligation
to the Government as a result of
having been awarded a national
Scholarship, however it is diffi-
cult to envision the next two and
a half years in a position that is
devoid of relevance/purpose to
me or society.
It is my humble yet provocative
request that the educational and
employment systems allow for a
greater measure of collaboration
between hiring institutions, uni-
versities, and prospective employ-
ees such that a balance is struck
between tailoring students
towards real developmental needs
of the nation, and the provision
of employment opportunities
where the value in the work we
produce is not questionable.
It is time that the rape and destruc-
tion of T&T by arms of the political par-
ties be stopped.
T&T's natural resources are not yours
to dispose of as you want. You have a
five-year mandate to improve the lives
of the citizens of this country not to de-
stroy its beauty and natural treasures.
What was seen on Facebook is most
disgusting. More so the chap who said
"his boss want the bags back."
That to me was the most disrespect-
ful thing I have heard. That says to us,
the citizens, that we are nothing, that
his boss runs the show.
Well, Mr Minister, I and all citizens are
now awaiting your instructions to your
favoured contractor/financier to get
back out there and pick up every grain of
sand with those same crocus bags.
It is about time you crack down force-
fully on all contractors who are raping
our beautiful lands.
While you are at it, and before our
movement becomes a pain in your side,
please stop all those businesses along
the Caroni Swamp that have sprung.
They are not there legally. That swamp
belongs to nature and to the animals
and micro-organisms that live and call it
This is ground zero for us the citizens
against the destruction of our treasures.
Politicians love this country. In
this context love is correctly spelt,
but is the wrong word.
The origin of St Valentine's Day
is, conveniently of course, shrouded
in mystery. Hearts and roses are red
but business people see blue---the
colour of money.
Teachers receive the most Valen-
tine cards, sweethearts the least. In
between we have children, mothers
Why do we send red roses? Red
roses are the favourite flower of the
Roman goddess of love, Venus.
Doesn't the day appeal to fleshly,
carnal desires? The hourly hotels
are always over subscribed, not that
I ever ventured in that direction.
The end point to all this love is
where men are not referred to as
husband but "my baby's father."
The observance of St Valentine's
Day is a well-orchestrated ploy by
businesses to generate sales of
flowers, cards and chocolates.
Why don't we express our love
throughout the year? Why wait for
February 14? The St Valentine's day
story is one of love and sacrifice.
I saw a friend recently with his
arm in a cast. When questioned
about it he replied, "Love hurts."
Love manipulates men to exhibit
strange behavioural traits. It caused
King Edward to leave the throne.
We have our own examples in local
