promised "total war" if she did
not resign before February 17.
Mr Duke s issues with the
ERHA CEO have continued for a
year and are best summarised as
a deep polarisation of interests
between the two parties on how
the business of the authority
should be run.
From Ms Ali s perspective, there
were deep inefficiencies at the
state health agency and she set
about correcting these matters.
Among the issues she sought to
resolve were high wage bills and
an overtime bill for the authority
that ran close to a quarter of a
million dollars a month.
In this, she had the endorse-
ment of the Minister of Health,
Dr Fuad Khan.
Ms Ali was fired a month after
taking up the job, and despite
that incident and other shakiness
between the CEO and the board
of directors and staff, she contin-
ued on the job until last week.
In March, six senior managers
were reported to have resigned
from the ERHA, including the
general manager of legal and cor-

The most troubling aspect of
this resolution of the ERHA
protests is the clear implication
that Ms Ali was bullied into
resigning her job by protesting
What Mr Duke may see as a
triumph is, after a year of such
concerns, also a failure of proper
human resource practices within
the public sector.
A manager having difficulties
with her staff should, after an
appropriate evaluation, either be
assessed as capable of doing the
job with proper training, be sup-
ported by mediation or invited to
resign, if the incompatibilities
between candidate and assign-
ment are too great.
There is no shame in such
matters when they are properly
and confidentially handled, and
both employer and employee can
go their separate ways with a far
better understanding of the
demands of the job.
Instead, it seems that the mat-
ter was left to linger until it

ERHA workers were left to
express their concerns via public
protest and Ms Ali has mentioned
no coaching support during her
tenure that might point to an
official effort to reconcile the per-
spectives of the staff and CEO.
Mr Duke s intervention, in the
apparent absence of official man-
agement of the situation, became
the deciding factor in a situation
that should, rightly, have been
managed to the satisfaction of all
concerned a year ago by internal
Government HR professionals.
If this unfortunate and messy
situation signals anything at all,
it s the need for the public sec-
tor s human resources services to
be more proactive in addressing
problems that arise between
employees and managers.
There is no reason why this
matter was played out and
resolved in headlines and news
broadcasts, but to the shame of
those with responsibility for man-
aging such matters, that s exactly

I'm confused. Very, very confused.
Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin
Netanyahu, says his country is in imminent
danger of being nuked off the face of the
earth by Iran.
But he wants every Jew to flee terror
attacks in the rest of the world...and come
to live in Israel?
Makes perfect sense, right?
Well, no, obviously it doesn't.
Netanyahu's reaction to the latest
appalling terror attacks in Denmark, which
echoed sentiments he expressed after the
Charlie Hebdo outrage in Paris, is a disgrace:
cowardly, self-serving, crassly insensitive
and overtly political.
He's got an election coming up, one he's
in serious danger or losing.
So what better way to galvanise the
Israeli electorate than to portray himself as
the great savior of all Jews around the

complete opposite effect to the one he
If every Jew in the world DID heed his
clarion call to emigrate to Israel, then the
only winners would be Islamic
ISIS and Al Qaeda would absolutely love
every Jew fleeing their homes and heading
to Israel. It would be the greatest
imaginable PR coup for them.
Jair Melchior, Denmark's chief rabbi, got it
right when he said: 'People from Denmark
move to Israel because they love Israel, not
because of terrorism. If the way to deal
with terror is to run somewhere else, we
should all run to a deserted island.'
That is not to negate the very real, and
very troubling rise in anti-Semitism,
especially in Europe.
One that requires immediate and
effective action from the leaders of all
countries where it is happening.
But the answer is not to fly the white
