Alliance of Independents interim (AI) chairman
Joe Pires says his resignation as the Vehicle Main-
tenance Corporation of T&T (VMCOTT) chairman
was rejected by Government recently, but he ll
resign again if the AI becomes a political party
and conflict of interest arises.
Pires, a former COP member, said yesterday he
offered his resignation from the state board to Trans-
port Minister Stephen Cadiz recently after he resigned
from the COP and the AI was being formed by Gary
and Nicole Griffith.
The AI is so far an umbrella movement bringing
together like-minded people, possibly toward a polit-
ical party. Garu Griffith who formed the group after
being removed from Government (concerning the
David West issue) says AI aims to make a difference
in the upcoming general election and larger parties
will have to recognise AI if they want to form gov-
Pires said he had been offered the VMCOTT chair-
manship by Cadiz during the PP s term and he
recently offered his resignation to Cadiz after he
resigned from COP.
But he said it was rejected. Pires said Cadiz asked

Govt rejects Pires VMCOTT resignation
Classes were suspended yesterday at Providence
Girls Catholic School, Belmont Circular Road,
Port-of-Spain, after thieves broke into the school
and stole valuable items over the weekend.
Students, teachers and staff expressed surprise
when they arrived at the school yesterday to discover
that the rooms were ransacked and items stolen.
A police report said a kettle, two microwaves
and $400 were stolen from the staff room.
Support staff arrived around 6.30 am and noticed
the staff room was ransacked and items missing.
They immediately notified the police who arrived
around 7.40 am.The students were sent home after
police officers arrived at the scene.
The principal suspended classes due to the police
Officials at the Ministry of Education said they
were aware of the incident.
Attempts to contact members of staff at the
school proved futile.
Thieves cart away
if he was contesting a seat against the PP and he
said he wasn t at that point. Pires said he told Cadiz
he hadn t made a decision on that.
Pires said he told Cadiz that in the next two to
three weeks when AI makes further decisions on
its future, if that position puts him in conflict of
interest with the VMCOTT post, he would offer
his resignation again. He said this would depend
on if AI gets a mandate from the public. He said
people have been pressing AI to form a party.
Pires said AI would have to consider if it had the
time to formalise structures/systems for a party for
an election which might be soon or whether in the
timing of swift election, a pressure group might be
best allowing AI time to build a party in the future.
Pires said he had one more VMCOTT board meet-
ing at month-end and hopefully would know his
position by then. He said if he felt uncomfortable
about chairing the meeting he would hand over to
the deputy chairman.
He said he understood well conflict of interest
since he was once offered the Chaguaramas Devel-
opment Authority chairmanship, but didn t accept
since he headed Bowen Boats, a CDA tenant.
He said: "So once AI s position is finalised and
if necessary I ll resign from VMCOTT. This isn t
a eat ah-food situation for me. But I served on the
FCB Board under the UNC administration and I
know what happens when government change and
the work boards are changed around. I once rec-
ommended law that allows state boards to have five
representatives of the government of the day, two
from the Opposition of the day and two from busi-
ness so all sectors will be represented and the best
expertise is available,"
AI holds public meetings in Diego Martin next
Monday and Tunapuna the following week. Nicole
Dyer-Griffith was tipped to be COP Tunapuna care-
taker in 2014 but this wasn t developed and she
resigned from COP recently forming AI.
Minister Cadiz said yesterday, he had a
conversation with Pires: "and if he joins
another party that isn't supportive of the
Government, then I expect he will do the right
thing. He's been a good chairman and turned
VMCOTT around under his chairmanship, but if
he's at odds with the PP, he'll have to leave."
