During the weekly press briefing yesterday head

PM plays with
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-
Bissessar yesterday said she had the
long-awaited election date, but she
was still not ready to reveal it though
she had it in either her back or front
"Of course I have the election date,"
the PM told journalists at the official
opening of the Southern Main Road
Improvement Project in Frederick Set-
Asked if she had it in her back pocket,
a phrase made famous by former prime
minister Patrick Manning, she quipped,
"Either back or front pocket."
The PM again gave the assurance that
the election would be called when it
was constitutionally due.
"We will stay within the law. I know
it is supposed to be held some time
before mid-September 2015.
"We will not do like others who have
postponed the local government elec-
tions three times," she said, in reference
to the former Manning administration.
The PM also responded to questions
on PNM Senator Faris Al-Rawi s charge
that her call for his resignation and the
withdrawal of his San Fernando West
candidacy was just a distraction from
the real issues.
Al-Rawi has said the People s Part-
nership (PP) cannot find a candidate to
match him in the crucial San Fernando
West seat, hence the call for his resig-
nation by the PM over an alleged breach
of parliamentary privilege in the Senate
while discussing a matter involving the
T&T Electricity Commission (T&TEC).

But Persad-Bissessar said it was a
very real and serious issue for which
someone had to answer.
As for the PP s chances of winning
San Fernando West, the PM said she
had no doubt as the PP had been work-
ing on the ground.
"Whether he (Al-Rawi) withdraws
his candidacy or not we will win San
She countered that it was a distraction
to say that her call was a distraction.
