The Buccoomatic Juice Bar in Buccoo, run
by Sheldon and ably supported by Miguel,
has taken this to extremes. They offer a
menu of mad mixes using an amazing range
of vegetables as well as the more normal
fruits like banana, or nuts like peanuts. Mix-
tures like Guinness, Split Pea and Beetroot
are not on your normal drinks list! And if
you wish, you can get him to make a punch of
your choice of ingredients and then give the
new mix a name! Sheldon offers a choice of
Condensed, Low Fat, Almond, Soy and Lac-
tose Free Milks to ensure that everyone can
partake of these punches. The bar is open
from 9am to 2pm and then 6pm till.....
For those out late in Scarborough or com-
ing off the evening ferry from Trinidad, there
is a Punch man to provide nourishment.
The very popular Bunky's Punches has a stall
by the First Citizen Bank car park from 7pm
till... Bunky offers some single ingredient
punches like Linseed, Banana, Beetroot, Sea
'Punch' in Tobago does not necessarily mean rum! The punch recipes
on the island are milk based which when blended with vegetables, fruit,
seeds, nuts or a mix of them, provide a really nutritious 'meal'.

Shumba (South African
for Lion) was a Punch
maker and a well-known
sight walking round Scar-
borough with a large
bucket in one hand and
cooler box under the other
arm selling a variety of his
popular ice cold Punches.
To see one man drinking
Shumba's linseed punch
was a sight to be seen!
Presumably a 'man food'!
As Shumba grew in popu-
larity he moved on to a
specially designed cart and
then to selling from his car.
Sadly he passed on re-
cently but his children con-
tinue the tradition.
And the unexpected in-
One of Shumba's spe-
cialities was Susumba, a
small green round some-
what bitter bean, growing
as a weed, but with some
amazing health properties
helping with anaemia and
diabetes amongst a range
of medical conditions.

Linseed (Flax) is one of
the most powerful plant
foods on the planet. It may
help reduce your risk of
heart disease, cancer,
stroke, and diabetes.

One really local punch is
'Cow Skin'. The cow skin is
shaved and steam cooked
in the abattoir before sell-
ing. The purchaser boils it
again and reserves the liq-
uid for punch. This punch is
praised as an aphrodisiac.
(The skin is used for souse
- marinated in limejuice, cu-
cumber, hot pepper and
shadon bene! An acquired
taste for some!
Punches are an enjoy-
able way to get a nutritious
and filling meal through a
straw. And the varieties
are always a surprise. Try
one and see!
