ments of the individuals."

In order for health institutions in the private sector
to provide healthcare in the medical tourism sector,
they must first become accredited. Deeming itself as
the first private healthcare institution to become
internationally accredited in the Caribbean, Medical
laboratory director Dr Bal Ramsaran, said the lab
offers a full range of laboratory services with state-

national accreditation. Accreditation is a document
produced by an accrediting body---ISO. This is a
compilation of rules and regulations on how a medical
laboratory is run efficiently."
Commenting on the building of a medical tourism
sector in T&T, he said:

accredited facilities which meet international stan-
dards. For us to even think about medical tourism,
our facilities must meet international standards. The
people who are in authority, the people who make
decisions must be serious about medical tourism.
The decision makers have been saying the same thing
for 20 years and they are still talking."
He added that healthcare is something to be taken
Ramsaran is a graduate of the University of the
West Indies and Leeds University in England where
he attained a doctorate in chemical pathology. He
was employed at Leeds General Infirmary and Leeds
Maternity Hospital before returning to T&T.
Events and promotion co-ordinator,
Tajh Maharaj, said F1RST.com can be
used as a platform for linking prospec-
tive patients and their families with the
medical sector in T&T. He said the vis-
itors would be able to find healthcare
centres and private hospitals.
Since the Web site started in early
2014, there were 20 million searches
for businesses of all types. While not
disclosing the plans for the Web site,
Maharaj said the company is now ready
to take another step into reaching out
to its customer base.

The global medical tourism mar-
ket is a large and growing one
and T&T wants a piece of it.
The market attracts global rev-
enues of between US$38.5billion
and US$55billion, according to

Building a medical tourism sector was discussed
at the health expo held at the Hyatt Regency in Port-
of-Spain from March 31 to April 1. It was entitled,
Medical Tourism, Are we ready? And the role of
Health Minister Fuad Khan, in his feature address,
said the private sector should take a leading role in
developing medical tourism in T&T.
Members of the private and public sector healthcare
professionals attended the event.
The business community showed its support by
participating in the expo.

While cars have nothing to do with health,
Sanjay Ali, sales executive, said the company
participated in the expo because it wanted
to provide support for the building of medical
tourism in T&T.
Referring to the luxury car market, Ali
said since Porsche released its new line of
luxury cars, Macan, he has seen an increase
in demand in the T&T market. He said the
vehicle is a little more affordable.

Promoting a healthy way of living is one of many
goals of this company, said Dakoda Martin, sales rep-
resentative, Caribbean Health Foods Ltd.
The company, which employs 150 people, partic-
ipated in the expo to educate young people about
healthy eating habits.
