When Alta first
began, many volun-
teers coming to us had
spent years in the
world of work. The
ones who had already
retired brought with
them experience and a
high level of commit-
ment that nowadays
seems so rare.
But today, as people
seek to find fulfilment
beyond their jobs, vol-
unteerism is seeing change. One agent of this change
is the Volunteer Centre of T&T (VCTT) which offered
to help Alta meet its goal of finding new volunteers
at the end of our recruitment period in February.
VCTT wants to redefine volunteerism and help
connect young professionals and conscious citizens
with the issues and people that matter. This week,
one VCTT recruit shares how she became involved,
and found her way to Alta.
My name is Nafeesa Ali and I m a past student of
St Stephen s College. In sixth form, all students were
exposed to a multitude of volunteer opportunities.
I m very passionate about undertaking such duties
and so I seized every chance to give towards any
The Adult Literacy Tutors Association was one
such avenue and for less than a year I understood
what it felt like to make not only a difference but to
change people s lives.
Together with another classmate, after school on
Wednesday and Friday, we would attend an Alta Level
One class, conveniently located at St Stephen s College
and assist the students.
We weren t trained tutors so this meant we could
help only in measured amounts but this did not take
away from the bliss of assisting these people to get
another shot at not just reading and writing but also
life. The Adult Literacy Tutor Association is the gateway
to a brighter future for many people who, because
of some previous unfortunate circumstance, missed
out on becoming literate and as such found difficulty
promoting themselves. Alta uplifts these people and
who wouldn t want to be a part of such a magnificent
Unfortunately when I left St Stephen s College, I
subsequently stopped volunteering with Alta. There-
fore, until months ago, rejoining and becoming an
Alta tutor was simply a prospect.
This was when another remarkable group came to
the rescue. The Volunteer Centre of T&T bridged the
gap between me and my dreams to become an Alta
tutor. I signed up at their Web site, www.vctt.org, to
be a member of this organisation when I found it
whilst doing research about volunteer opportunities
The Volunteer Centre of T&T constantly contacts
its members on various volunteer opportunities
throughout the country. When I received notice of
Alta s recruitment call for people interested in becom-
ing a tutor, I was elated and wasted no time in placing
myself in queue to become a future advocate for lit-
Thanks to The Volunteer Centre of T&T, for advanc-
ing not just myself, but lots of people towards vol-
unteerism. Martin Luther King Jr said that everybody
can be great because anybody can serve. The Volunteer
Centre of T&T is a vehicle we can drive towards the
destination of greatness.
It s been a month since I was interviewed to become
an Alta tutor and I am currently an observer at an
Alta class and will soon be trained to become a tutor.
I look forward to this and I invite anyone interested
in making a difference to contact The Adult Literacy
Tutors Association or The Volunteer Centre of T&T.
HBO s Game of Thrones has the dubi-
ous honour of being popular with both
pirates and viewers.
After its fifth season began Sunday, users
of a Twitter-owned live-streaming app
shared the fantasy drama.
HBO said Tuesday it sent "take down"
notices to Periscope, the app that allows
video streaming from users phones to
their Twitter followers.
Twitter, which recently acquired
Periscope, said the app complies with US
copyright law and will respond to valid
On Monday, HBO said four unaired
Game of Thrones episodes that were leaked
online had come from within a group
authorised to receive preview DVDs.
The unrelated incidents don t appear
to have hurt the show s ratings. HBO hasn t
released figures, but reports say nearly
eight million viewers tuned in to the pre-
miere, the best start yet for the series
based on the works of George RR Mar-
tin.HBO indirectly chided Periscope, saying
in a statement that app developers should
have tools to "proactively prevent mass
copyright infringement" and not rely solely
on being notified after such incidents
Neither HBO nor Twitter had further
comment on the issue.
But in a Periscope copyright policy post-
ed online, the company said it expects
users to respect intellectual property rights
and asks those alleging copyright infringe-
ment to contact it with details and proof.
The policy also says that Periscope
reserves the right to remove such content
without prior notice and to terminate the
account of a "repeat infringer." (AP)
