Asked to explain the reasons for
reconsidering the rejected nomi-
nees, Ford said: "Well the screening
committee had to deliberate on
what comes before it, and having
screened ten we were not getting
any better (nominees)."
He said that course of action
was not in breach of anything
"because we did it in Tunapuna,
Cumuto/Manzanilla and other
constituencies... even Barataria/San
Juan we went back but the con-
stituency came up with Mr Hafeez
Ford said: "No one on the 17-
member executive voted for
Browne. He didn't get one vote in
the second round again. We asked
the executive again to consider and
make recommendations and they
came back again the same way."
He said Smith got the most
votes---nine---from the executive.
Ford said the review of the
rejected nominees was "an oppor-
tunity open to all. Sometimes you
are in this position where you
exhaust all (avenues) and we can't
be going and coming all the time
so we had to make a decision at
some point. In fact we are late, we
were supposed to finish since Holy
The committee also approved a
new nominee for Barataria/San

tractor from the constituency.
He said Chaguanas East exec-
utive was given additional time to
find suitable nominees.

The PNM screening committee did not choose
any prospective candidate for the Chaguanas East
constituency on Monday night.
That was confirmed by PNM general secretary
when he spoke with reporters after the five-hour
screening exercise at Balisier House, Port-of-Spain.
Angry party members told the T&T Guardian,
earlier, that members of the Chaguanas East con-
stituency executive walked out of a meeting with
the screening committee, chaired by party leader Dr
Keith Rowley at Balisier House. The constituency
chairman, Irvin Isles remained in the meeting with
the screening committee.
Sources said the executive members were frustrated
by an attempt by the committee to have a rejected
nominee, Deowatie Lalman, approved as the can-
However Ford said: "We have been deliberating
on the recommendations of the constituencies (and)
in the case of Chaguanas East, again no result.
"We had a long discussion with the Chaguanas
East constituency and they are making every effort
to get the appropriate nominee to come for screen-
In response to questions on the matter, Ford said
Chaguanas East had asked for more time.
He added: "Really, that's a different situation and
they are looking diligently and we hope they will
come up with somebody in the shortest possible
time," he added.
The party secretary denied that the screening
committee was insisting on Lalman as the candidate.
"No, no... there was normal recommendations
and as with every other constituency, when you
don't get who you want you feel annoyed."
"We held discussions with the chairman (con-
stituency) and he agreed to go back and see if he
can get somebody new.
"No one was chosen. He said the party's leadership
will determine the amount of additional time to be
given to Chaguanas East to find a suitable nominee."
Party leader Dr Keith Rowley expressed his sat-
isfaction with the PNM's candidate selection process.
Speaking with reporters outside Balisier Houseon
Monday night, Rowley said the process was expected
to be completed next Monday "but we still have one
more outstanding constituency. We have done 40.
We have done quite well and we are quite pleased
with that." See Page A10
