Nafaqa gets his chance to become a live
Epsom Derby prospect today!
One of eight decs for the £100000 group
two Dante Stakes, over an extended ten fur-
longs of good ground York, this consistent
Sir Percy colt has achieved by far the actual
best time-figure and races on a wonderful
left-handed track which represents the
definitive front-running course; will jockey
Paul Hanagan be granted license to exploit
the stamina which trainer Barry Hills is
convinced he possesses?
Given at least four have no chance what-
soever they will surely decide to sort out
the wheat from the chaff; incidentally that s
the way owner Hamdan al Maktoum likes
his horses to be ridden, positively.
Form of Nafaqa bears close inspection;
though Elm Park came out better at New-
market last October I m convinced there
are good reasons to believe placings can be
reversed; the others which rate consideration
are Jack Hobbs and Golden Horn, trained
by John Gosden.
Jack Hobbs won a handicap unchallenged
at Sandown last month off a mark of 85.
Subsequently Jack was raised 24 pounds
which must have been a panic measure
because the time-handicap mark was at
least 10lbs inferior to that of Nafaqa when
he scored so impressively at Doncaster last
season; he s trained on, second in the Craven
is proof positive.
In summary Nafaqa has solid graded form,
should act on this surface, is ideally suited
by the distance and faces vulnerable oppo-
sition, if allowed to set a strong pace in the
way Roberto did when beating Brigadier
Gerard over this course and distance 43
I ll bet Barry can remember that, Arc
winner, Rheingold, was behind!
Newmarket stages a seven-race evening
programme which kicks off with a Maiden
auction Stakes over six furlongs and a chance
for Sparky Jack to make it third time lucky.
This-type race appeals, often they are
little more than selling grade with a clutch
of cheapies in opposition; Sparky Jack might
just prove a cut above and Hundi will surely
take Charles Hills off the dreaded cold list
in the Maiden Fillies Stakes over seven fur-
Hundi has any amount in hand and

pathway to a poor house don t oppose; if
she doesn t win this time...!

Star Of Seville survived the late rally of Together
Forever to stake her claim for the Investec Oaks
in the Tatteralls Musidora Stakes, yesterday.
The 4/6 favourite was sent to the front from the
start by Frankie Dettori and quickened clear of the
field when pushed along two furlongs out.
She looked to have put the race to bed at the
furlong-pole, but the John Gosden-trained filly
started to idle and edge left and Ryan Moore sensed
an opportunity was about to appear on the run-
Asking her to go and catch the leader, Together
Forever made rapid inroads into Star Of Seville s
advantage, but no sooner had she nearly drawn
alongside the leader, Star of Seville sensed that the
race was on again and just picked up again in the
final strides to to score by a head.
Pandora ran a solid race for third, a further two
and three-quarter lengths adrift.
Interestingly, both the winner and the runner-
up were quoted afterwards at 8/1 with Sky Bet for
the Oaks, the bookmakers presumably taking note
of the fact that the runner-up was giving 4lb to
Star Of Seville.
However, Dettori was notably upbeat about his
mount s Epsom prospects, saying: "For some reason,
she seemed to just want wait for them to catch her
up at the furlong-pole before she went on again!
"I really like her and the thing is you don t know
how much more there is the tank. The feeling she
gives you is that there is more to come and she s
a well-balanced filly with a good attitude and I
don t think Epsom will be any problem at all."
Gosden added: "Frankie said she was just waiting
in front. That was a Group One filly coming at her.
Luckily, when she got there she started going again.
It is a long time to be in front for an inexperienced
filly. She has gone from a maiden to a conditions
race to winning a Group Three Musidora, so things
are very positive.
"This is a nice filly, but she is still learning. She
was a long time in front, but Ryan (Moore) is a
master at timing his run to catch you late on."

BALTIMORE---Kentucky Derby winner American
Pharoah was made the 4-5 morning-line favourite
for Saturday s Preakness and will attempt to win
it from the unfavorable No 1 post to set up a Triple
Crown attempt in the Belmont Stakes.
A field of eight three-year-olds was entered yes-
terday, the smallest since 2000, when Red Bullet
upset Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.
Trainer Bob Baffert is looking for his sixth Preakness
win with American Pharoah and Dortmund, who
drew the No 2 post. Third in the Derby, Dortmund
was the 7-2 second choice. Derby runner-up Firing
Line leaves from the outside No 8 spot and is the
third choice at 4-1.
Baffert has never liked the No 1 post, and history
backs him up. The last horse to win the Preakness
from the inside post was Tabasco Cat in 1994; the
last to win it from the No 2 post was Snow Chief
in 1986. Baffert has ten wins in Triple Crown races,
and none started from the rail.
If American Pharoah wins, it would set up Baffert
for an unprecedented fourth Triple Crown try. The
last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978.
Victor Espinoza has the mount on American
Pharoah, with Martin Garcia aboard Dortmund. Hall
of Famer Gary Stevens is aboard Firing Line.
The field, from the rail out is American Pharoah
(Espinoza, 4-5); Dortmund (Garcia, 7-2); Mr Z (Corey
Nakatani, 20-1); Danzig Moon (Julien Leparoux, 15-
1); Tale of Verve (Joel Rosario, 30-1); Bodhisattva
(Trevor McCarthy, 20-1); Divining Rod (Javier Castel-
lano, (12-1); and Firing Line (Stevens, 4-1). (AP)
