and over again, until such time that
the people understand that the prob-
lems that we face will not be solved by
the two major parties, until they recog-
nise that, I have to continue on this
journey to let them know that.
You announced that you were look-
ing for 40 candidates to carry the
DPTT banner in the 2015 polls. How
successful have you been in recruiting
these 40 gallant combatants?
We have not started recruiting anyone
as yet. Our mission at the moment is
that we want to share the vision. You
see, there is absolutely no point in put-
ting people up in a seat to say "I want
to win an election."
But isn t that the name of the game?
(Protesting) No. There is no point
wining an election, as you can see from
our history, if you don t have a vison
where this country ought to be. So our
first mission is to share that vision
which is what we have been doing at
Briefly, Mr Alvarez, what is that
What we want to do is to change the
structure of government so that the
people in every community in T&T
have a say in how their respective com-
munity is developed.
Fighting a general election, Mr
Alvarez, takes much more than bank-
ing on the faith of your fellow citizens,
and what makes you think that Trinis
would rush to support you financially?
Now it is not as expensive as you
might think. Take this example, a lot
of people would come to me saying "I
see your television production and that
must be costing you a lot of money."
But really, it is just a group of young
people who love their cameras, who
walk around with me saying "let s do
this." So at the end of the day, what it
would cost another political party say
$40,000, would cost me a few hundred
dollars. And that s the sort of thing we
intend to do in terms of this campaign.
Our campaign would be mainly
aimed at the social media where we do
not have to pay all this sort of hard
cash. I cannot afford to get the con-
ventional media to pay for time and
what have you.
Won t that put your party at a fur-
It is only disadvantageous for now.
When the word starts getting around
you will see what is going to happen.
I see you are optimistic that you
may turn out to be like the pied piper
and have the people madly following
(Laughs) I rather think people will
join me and say "look we have a nation
I recall reading on Facebook you
complaining that only two of the conventional
media houses attended the launch of your party s
campaign. Isn t that an indication of how they feel
about the chances of the DPTT at the upcoming
You know, Clevon, I am not deterred by stuff like
that, as a citizen of T&T I can do the best I can with
what I have rather than sit here and complain, because
I know the two major parties cannot take us to where
we want to go.
As someone who has the unenviable position of
having lost your deposit on the two occasions you
fought the general election how does it feel to lose
that hard earned cash in the service of your country
as you might think?
Well it could be depressing but for us, it is
simply...for us it was all about that journey.
Are you sure it isn t more about you getting that
adrenalin rush seeing your name in the media...that
15 minutes of fame?
If it was that then I would not have spent all the
time sharing that vision. The vision is what is impor-
tant to me. I don t really care about Steve Alvarez
and whether somebody knows or do not know
him. I spent four years at the SASC and I
would walk in there and do what I had to do
without trying to get any media attention.
In fact, the people there were surprised that
being chairman I was an easy-going person
who would make his own coffee and do his
own thing without any fuss whatsoever.
I am not about me, and this journey is
still about where we need to take this
Finally, Mr Alvarez, do your really see
yourself in the next couple of month
being Prime Minister of T&T?
(Leaning forward with both hands on
his desk and with controlled passion) If
I did not, I would not be speaking to you
at this time, Mr Raphael. From the age
of 11, I always felt that one day I
would be Prime Minister of T&T,
and I have to be believe if I have
quest to get us where we need
to be. And I believe that things
will happen as things change
'I have a vision for T&T'
"There is no point wining an
election, as you can see from our
history, if you don't have a vison
where this country ought to be. So
our first mission is to share that
vision which is what we have been
doing at Gayelle Television."
