Now that Jack Warner has
been indicted by the US
on charges of corruption,
the people of T&T should not
be too hasty to convict him
prematurely on what could be
a lengthy legal process, with
extradition and subsequent
trial possibly taking years to
After all, due process of law
is a constitutional guarantee of
the United States constitution
that applies not only to state
governments, but also to the
Indeed, since the charges
against Fifa officials were
brought by the US Department
of Justice, with an FBI
involvement, this makes it a
federal government indictment.
The problems for Warner are
three-fold: first, there is the
trial that could take years;
second, what happens to his
political organisation, the
Independent Liberal Party
(ILP), of which he is the
leader, while he fights these
allegations---would he be
allowed to leave the US during
the trial to contest the
upcoming general elections?
Third, would his political
and financial empire crumble
during his absence?
In the ongoing libel trial
brought against him, Warner
was asked whether he sudden-
ly became Saint Jack now that
he was not in the Cabinet;
and there are those who
accuse Fifa of being like the
So the question that the
country wants to know is:
Who is Jack Warner, sinner,
saint, or Don?

that many letters in the press

After the PNM convention
held recently, many supporters
left depressed asking for the re-
turn of their former leader.
In simple words, he failed to
"fire them up" in what should
have been their biggest event.
The citizenry is far more edu-
cated than in the 1970s and '80s.
As a result, they would not
gullibly fall for a re-wrapped ver-
sion of the old 2020 vision that
had many of the same proposals.
In 2015, the voters will simply
ask themselves how they bene-
fited from this administration.
The second question will be how
they will benefit if the govern-
ment is changed.
The conclusion of the recent
elections in the UK should be a
lesson for all to heed.
With those things being con-
sidered, the current administra-
tion is far ahead in the race.
This is truly a "silly season" when
politicians of all colours and persua-
sions not only make fools of themselves
by their exaggerated promises but, even
more unfortunate, they tend generally
also to succeed in making fools of the
electorate which imbibes these promises
somewhat thoughtlessly with glee and
with high expectation.
The latest episode in this category
could very well be the "$100 Houses"

which, in my opinion, while sounding
clever and attractive politically, makes

Lord, when will it end?
My understanding is that, on average,
mortgage agreements entered into with
their tenants by the Housing Develop-
ment Corporation (HDC) are for a period
of 30 years. From this it follows that
HDC tenants who had been regular with
their payments would not be expected
to fall within the ownership category as
set out by the Prime Minister.
Indeed, assuming that the period does
happen to be 30 years or thereabout, it
follows that tenants who are likely to
benefit are those who are in arrears with
their HDC mortgage payments...Is this
fair? Methinks not!

This is clearly the case with the
recent development where seven
Fifa officials were arrested, and 14
indicted in a US corruption case.
Among the indicted defenders is
no other than our very own Jack
Warner (former Fifa vice president
and leader of the Independent Lib-
eral Party). This is the same indi-
vidual who preached integrity and
condemned the current adminis-
tration's governance after he was
himself asked to step down having
not cleared his name in the very
same Fifa allegations.
This latest case highlights and
reinforces what many of us be-

the ILP. Now tell me, how is it that
