Artists of all times, in all societies, have supported,
collaborated and competed with each other. Out-
standing groups have been identified by common
styles---Impressionists, Fauvists---or the eras in which
they worked---Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Art Deco.
In Trinidad in the 1930s, the Society of Trinidad
Independents founded by Amy Leong Pang and her
friend Hugh Stollmeyer, identified themselves for
independence of thought. And in 2015, another group
of contemporaries are coming together to Show
Alicia Milne, curator of the show, which opens at
Medulla on Fitt Street this Wednesday evening,
explains, "We are a group of artists linked to each
other along a continuum. We decided to support each
other by showing together. It is difficult to name a
show when you have a group of artists working across
varied media and concerns. The work being shown
represents what we are working on at this moment.
So (S)HOW can be read as Show like an exhibition,
or Show How."
Indeed, this exhibition of five contemporaries---
Jaime Lee Loy, Alicia Milne, Nikolai Noel, Tamara
Tam-Cruikshank and Luis Vazquez La Roche---will
reveal five individual minds, separate thought processes,
different techniques and slices of life experiences that
may be considered markers on their journeys as artists.
"All of us came through the UWI art programme.
Nikolai, Tamara and I were in class together. Luis was
the year behind us and Jaime graduated a few years
before," says Milne. "We have all remained in contact
iv r i o o or wor u
over the years and created various projects
together. Jaime and Nikolai were in the 200
Drawings project together. At that time Mar-
lon Griffith was working with them. Luis
and I did our version of the same project,
200 Drawings, with Nikolai.
"Luis, Tamara, Nikolai and I run See You
on Sundays (SYoS), an artist collective based
on education, critique and dialogues that
started in 2013. We have been staging public
critiques of participating artists at Alice Yard
since the start of 2015."
(S)HOW comes out of an agreement to
show together because they like each other s
work and want to see more contemporary
exhibitions. Medulla s coordinator/curator,
Martin Mouttet is happy to have succeeded
in bringing the group together for this exhi-
bition, which runs until July 15. An Artists
Talk is scheduled for July 1, at 7 pm.
Each artist is showing recently completed
current works. The exhibits will vary from
ceramic installations, drawings, collages, floor
drawings, audio work and mixed media instal-
lations. As the curator, Milne s job is to select
and install the work in a way that makes
interesting relationships between the objects
and their concerns.
The products and expressions of these five
artists will surely resonate with the concerns
of the wider society, certainly at the personal
level, and hopefully touch societal concerns
"We all appreciate each other s practice
and concerns," says Milne. "We work across
such varied media but are all interested in
encouraging each other and creating oppor-
tunities for our work and the work of other
young contemporary practitioners."
