Political leader of the Independent
Liberal Party (ILP) Jack Warner
recalled the night he spent at prison,
saying while it almost reduced him
to tears it had also forced him to reflect
on his life and see things differently.
Warner had been granted TT$2.5
million bail to cover 12 criminal charges
on which he is wanted in the United
States for racketeering which covers
money laundering, extortion and
He was forced to spend the night at
the Remand Prison, Frederick Street,
Port-of-Spain because he was unable
to secure bail.
Warner, who was speaking at a cot-
tage meeting held at La Paille Gardens,
Caroni, on Wednesday night, said:
"In the prison I had to take off my
shoe and shirt and put a sign there as
a prisoner... take a picture. I almost
cried... from where I had come from
to where I had reached. Even then I
said it can t be Kamla.
"But that night in prison opened my
eyes. I sat on my bed and couldn t
I said Here is Jack Warner who had
been feted by Clinton, by Queen Eliz-
abeth, by Obama by Mandela.. .I have
eaten with these guys. These guys had
solicited my friendship but today I am
in a cell.
"There is nothing you could say to
me that could quantify how I felt that
night. And then I said It can t be the
cabal. That is Kamla, " Warner said.
Saying he should have seen the
"writing on the wall" a long time ago,
Warner said a plot to force him out as
national security minister was in the
making by the "cabal" in the People s
Partnership Government for some time.
"Kamla and I used to speak at 3.30
every morning. I became the envy of
my colleagues. I didn t take any salary,
no travel, no tax free car, the envy grew
from bad to worse. If I had the sense
as I have now I would have seen the
envy on the wall.
"While I was in the cell Kamla for
the first time ever reading out the war-
rant in the Parliament. Kamla do me
that. She put it in Hansard," Warner
He added that at this stage in his life
he had nothing to lose as it was now
a "fight to the finish."
Warner said while he gave his all as
national security minister he became
the envy of certain government min-
isters because he was the best and most
hard-working minister. See Page A11

Independent Liberal Party
(ILP) political leader, Jack
Warner, says he cannot attack
People s National Movement
(PNM) leader Dr Keith Rowley
since Rowley was not the Gov-
In response to questions from
T&T Guardian on Wednesday, Warner also said he had
not held any type of meeting with Rowley.
He was asked his sentiments on Rowley following
his La Paille Gardens, Caroni, cottage meeting where
he said he never had any anger towards the PNM
except for former PNM leader Patrick Manning.
Warner said while he had been supporting the
United National Congress (UNC) over the years, the
PNM had felt he was betraying it as the UNC was
not his natural political base.
Asked about his feelings on Rowley, he said: "It
was unfortunate the People s Partnership (PP) had
been accusing him of having meetings with Rowley
since the PP was being attacked by both Rowley and
"But the PP is the Government. I can t attack
Rowley. He s not the Government. He never was. He
wasn t even prime minister but I have to attack the
Government. They fooled me and said there would
not be any nepotism."
He challenged UNC deputy leader Dr Roodal
Moonilal to say he (Moonilal) had not sent OAS Con-
strutora, the Brazilian company hired to construct
the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point
Fortin, an email seeking $50 million for election cam-
"Let him say no... don t worry about the date of
the email, I have time, I will present things accord-
ingly," said Warner.
He also criticised President Anthony Carmona s
remarks about "rumshop logic".
The President alluded to that on Wednesday during
the swearing in of two new Integrity Commission
In his speech, Carmona said: "Simplistic and some-
times inane referencing without more to presidential
powers that I have and don t have, may have appealed
to those engaged in rumshop logic ."
But Warner asked: "I am ashamed he said this so
anyone who opposes him or this government is a
rumshop thinker? What does he
mean by that? He s the President
and he has insulted this nation.
"I ll deal with him in the full-
ness of time. He s a one-term
President and I will speak more
on that later but I am ashamed
he can talk about rumshop
He said the ILP would begin
screening election nominees soon and he was willing
to contest even his Chaguanas West seat again if
"I ve worked hard for them... (nomination) would
be the highest level of gratitude anyone could ever
display. Ganga Singh (UNC) would be the candidate
but I will go," he added.
Warner admitted there would be a drop in Chagua-
nas West support by now but he attributed that to
his lack of Government resources.
"What they can t beat me on is commitment and
loyalty," he added.
Warner queries $50m
