Brazen Beau attempts to recoup considerable
Royal Ascot losses by landing the highly-prestigious
group one, £500,000, July Cup over six furlongs
of a good to firm Newmarket July Course today;
top Australian trainer Chris Waller has been over
here supervising sensational work by the four-
year-old I Am Invincible colt and we ve all been
impressed by their presence.
Ridden by Craig Williams in the grade one Dia-
mond Jubilee over a similar distance Brazen Beau
stormed into the lead about 150 metres out only to
be collared close home by the outstanding USA speed-
ster Undrafted, my personal selection which was
published in newspapers throughout the world.
Obviously it was no surprise to yours truly when
Frankie Dettori got a huge response from Wesley
Ward s charge but the time-handicap figure was
enormous; how unlucky was Brazen Beau to run into
such a monster and how unlucky was Crfaig Williams
to be blamed for defeat due to his enterprise and
courage ploughing a lone furrow down the stands-
When I heard that Godolphin, which bought into
Brazen Beau, had decided to replace Williams, one
of the very best jockeys on this planet, with their
jockey, James Doyle, it seemed the world had gone
There was absolutely nothing Williams could have
done but, there again, armchair viewers are the best
and always have been throughout my life as a leading
racing correspondent for more than forty-five years,
which included winners in Australia with Middleton
TORONTO---Reigning Woodbine champion
Patrick Husbands seems to be finally hitting
his stride, after a sluggish start to the new sea-
son at the prestigious Toronto oval.
On Wednesday, the veteran Barbadian rider
posted two victories on the eight-race card to
follow up his triple on last Sunday s programme,
where he also captured his first added money
win of the season by taking the CAN$150,000
He opened his account in race one with the
favourite Pretty Bird and returned to the winners
enclosure in race four with 5-1 bet Just Coz.
Despite his recent success, however, Husbands
remains well off the pace this season, lying fifth
on 33 wins. He is six off the fourth placed Jesse
Campbell and a whopping 30 behind leader,
2010 champion Eurico Rosa da Silva.
Luis Contreras, a three-time former champion
who Husbands dethroned last season, lies second
on 47 wins.
Going six furlongs in race one, Husbands
made all the running with Pretty Bird to beat
the three-year-old fillies by three-quarter lengths.
He and the bay filly duelled with Lady of
Moray through the quarter before getting clear
in the stretch and holding well despite pressure
In race four over seven furlongs, Husbands
partnered with the three-year-old filly, Just Coz,
to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies
and mares who have never won two races.
Stormy Fling hammered out the fractions
through the half mile with Husbands saving
ground with Just Coz within range of the lead-
ers.Husbands then bid in the stretch, producing
a determined drive to overhaul the leaders and
reach the wire 1-1/4 lengths clear.
Sam and Last Stand all those years ago. I ll
go to my grave wondering what Williams
could have done differently given the sen-
Muhaarah is reckoned a major rival and
has been joint-favourite with Beau on the
strength of his group one success at the
Royal meeting; apparently he remains in
the form of his life.
Right what is the right course?
I ll play bookmaker because two 3-y-
o s against the might and power of aged
thoroughbreds will be tough and my selec-
tion is Muthmir, each-way.
When betting seriously it doesn t pay to
guess or hope, you need to know; patience
and two-year-olds are my modus operandi
and I m still here!
Thrice-raced Poldark is expectedx to go
one better in the Maiden Auction Stakes
over seven furlongs of good to firm Ascot;
what beats Richard Hannon s charge will
win and a similar comment applies to Tuco
one of eleven decs for the Maiden Stakes
over seven at Salisbury, where a similar fast
surface is anticipated.
Any updates on this marathon day will
be posted on www.dailyearner.co.uk.
