Incumbent Tobago East MP Vernella Alleyne-
Toppin has been given the nod by the Tobago
Organisation of the People (TOP) to contest for
a second term in the September 7 general elec-
The party has also chosen Bishop's High School
Geography teacher Natasha Ann Second for Tobago
TOP chairman Anthony Arnold made the
announcement during a press conference at the
party's Scarborough headquarters on Friday.
Political leader Ashworth Jack and Second were
notably absent during the announcement.
Arnold said both candidates have greatly con-
tributed to Tobago and both would do well at the
He also noted that the executive's decision to
select Alleyne-Toppin was easy because she had
effectively served the people.
"It took us a long time to get this one right,"
"We are proud of our representative for Tobago
East, she has worked on behalf of the Tobago
people, she has done well for both the people in
the east and in the west, and I think she deserves
another chance as she is seeking re-election from
the people of Tobago."
Alleyne-Toppin has been embroiled in numerous
controversies since her election in 2010.
Chief among them were allegations she made
about Opposition leader Dr Keith Rowley's family
under cover of Parliamentary privilege, a situation
which drew scathing criticism and calls for her
resignation or firing from some sectors of society.
Speaking at the press conference, Alleyne-Top-
pin said she was grateful that the TOP had the
confidence in her for a second term. She said
while many negatives were reported during her
tenure, she is confident that her work would speak
"My work for the last five years in Tobago and
in Trinidad far exceeds any kind of con-
troversy that might have come up about
what I have said or done, or what was
reported that I have said or done by peo-
ple who are trying to diminish me as a
person, defame my character and trying
to demotivate me so that I would not
function as I should among my people,"
In 2010 Alleyne-Toppin and Dr Delmon
Baker captured the Tobago East and West
seats respectively for TOP.
But Baker could not submit his nom-
ination papers for re-election as on July
8 he was expelled from the TOP by the
executive. They cited numerous infrac-
tions that questioned his credibility to
TOP sticking with Vernella
