"Politics is never without race, and
anyone who believes that politics will
never be without race is only fooling
This is the frank statement by Mr
Winston Gypsy Peters on a morn-
ing talk show programme yesterday,
subsequent to his resignation from
the People's Partnership govt and
merely a week prior to the highly-con-
tested 2015 general election.
Mr Peters asserts that whilst there
may be "good men" like him, who are
neutral to the racial affiliation of the
nation's leader, many people are in-
clined to seek representation from
"their own kind" and prefer domi-
nance by those belonging to their
specific racial grouping.
Mr Peters' statement articulated a
clear understanding of our society
where our people can be likened to
pieces of differently-coloured cloth.
We have been snatched from all
places across the globe and seam-
lessly woven together during a Carni-
val fete or a Red Steel cricket match,
but are half-heartedly and carelessly
stitched together during election
campaigns where our tendency to
gravitate to "our own kind" manifests
I think the formation of a coalition
government in 2010 to an extent rep-
resented a divorce from the colonial-
influenced, race-based voting that our
own politicians always seem to resur-
rect and redeploy.
As a young voter and an average
citizen who is sensitive to the views
from the ground, it is evident that a
large segment of our mindful popula-
tion is disenchanted with old gover-
But given that allegations of cor-
ruption on the part of government
and opposition alike require us to
choose to cast a vote for the "lesser
of two (or three) evils," I provocatively
question to what extent will race play
a role in determining our next prime
minister on September 7, 2015?
