Perkunas ticks enough boxes, and
more, for the Maiden Stakes over seven
furlongs of good ground Brighton today
when Windsor and Perth (jumps) run in
tandem; three meetings? we can cope
Following weeks of overwhelming six
race-cards a day this will give punters the
chance to take stock and spend time study-
ing form but it s a far cry from the golden,
olden days when we actually had the occa-
sional day off with no race-meetings
scheduled; only bad weather affords such
luxury nowadays and it is wonderful to
relax for a whole day because racing brings
its own pressure, for all involved.
I ve been racing for fifty years, would
not change it for anything, even now, but
know punters are being taken for a ride
with so few opportunities; answer is to
specialise and my policy of focusing 100%
on two-year-old racing is, again, paying
off.Just look at the current Racing Post
Brian Meehan is a favourite trainer, he
feeds well, conditions superbly and has
patience; during the back-end period he s
usually successful and I ll bet Perkunas
and other juveniles will advertise his
prowess along with faithful, veteran, stable
jockey, Jimmy Fortune.
Costa goes in every day to ride work
and assist Meeha; they are a team, good
friends, due to mutual respect and know
that Perkunas is a good sort, a winner-
waiting-to-happen judged on an excellent
effort in the Convivial over a similar dis-
tance at York last month; rock solid form!
It s imperative to stick with in-form
trainers and that s why John Gosden-
trained Heroic Heart is selected to make
it fifth time lucky for the Maiden Fillies
Stakes over six furlongs of good to soft
Windsor where the first four races of an
eight-race programme are for two-year-
Heroic Heart has been performing ade-
quately over seven furlongs, this drop back
in trip should suit her ideally; I ve often
maintained that seven is the toughest dis-
tance for all thoroughbreds, for so many
reasons, one of them being pace and speed.
Frankie Dettori partners Heroic Heart
for a second time; this Invincible Spirit
achieved her best time-handicap mark
under him at Newmarket where they were
beaten narrowly by three-quarters of a
length; a replication of that should be good
Dettori also rides twice-raced Four On
Eight in the Maiden Stakes over an extend-
ed mile for his one-time boss Luca Cumani
who has also been among the winners
recently. Look no further for the winner
and keep checking ww.dailyearner.co.uk
Toormore went a couple of places better
than last year as he won the Group Two
International Topkapi Trophy at Veliefendi
racecourse in Turkey.
Richard Hannon s charge finished a close
third in the mile heat in 2014 but having
his third start for new owners Godolphin,

Golden Tower set out to make all and
Toormore took a keen hold in the early
stages, with Doyle opting to settle on the
leader s heels before launching his winning
run in the straight.
While he drifted slightly across for the
track in the final strides, Toormore ran out
a comfortable winner while stablemate Shift-
ing Power was out of the frame.
Toormore s triumph rounded off a fine
weekend for the Godolphin team with Local
Time and Tha ir having landed valuable
prizes on Saturday.
Their representative Jono Mills said: "(It
was) very straightforward in the end, he
jumped well and always had a good posi-
"James rode him with great confidence
and it was a fantastic climax to the weekend
"Local Time travelled nicely in her race
and responded well when Harry Bentley
pressed the button and it was a very sat-
isfying result. Harry gave her a lovely ride
so it was great.
"Tha ir did it well in the end. (Stablemate)
Tumbaga set a decent pace from a wide
draw. Harry said he thought Tumbaga got
the trip but just got beaten by a better horse
on the day in Tha ir.
"It was a great result for Godolphin having

Hannon also struck gold with Orvar in
the International Trakya (Thrace) Trophy.
Last seen when finishing fifth in a sales
race at York, Orvar outbattled Graystorm

Maftool finished to good effect but the
Luca Cumani-trained Connecticut had
already seized the advantage and held on
at the line for jockey Adam Kirby.
Cumani s assistant trainer Amy Murphy
said: "He s a horse we ve always held in
high regard. Today proves we can write off
the Goodwood run and he simply didn t
handle the track.
"We re delighted with today s performance
and hopefully we can go onwards and
upwards from here".
Mills added of the runner up: "He ran a
great race to finish second and we were
delighted with him.
"He is a very good horse on his day, but
he just found one too good in Connecti-
Last year's 1000 Guineas victor Miss France had to
settle for second on her belated seasonal return at
Longchamp. Andre Fabre's charge had been off the track
since finishing second in the Sun Chariot Stakes at
Newmarket last October, with a reported splint problem
delaying her return.
Back to fitness now, Miss France was partnered for
the first time by Frankie Dettori in the Prix de la Cochere
and after showing some late pace, the four-year-old had
to settle for second behind Sonnerie.
Three Group Three events had taken place earlier on
the card with Vazirabad outbattling Big Blue to claim the
Prix du Lutece, while Taniyar lifted the Prix du Pin to
make it a double for trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre and
jockey Christophe Soulmillon.
The Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained Attendu just held on
to the Prix La Rochette in the hands of Maxime Guyon.
Jockey Aspell taken to hospital
Leighton Aspell was taken to hospital for further
checks following a nasty fall at Fontwell on Sunday.
Partnering Uptendownone in the Stephanie Rees
Rainbow Child Foundation Handicap Hurdle, Aspell
parted company with his Gary Moore-trained mount at
the second obstacle.
The dual Grand National-winning jockey was initially
treated on the track before being taken to hospital for
further examination. The track tweeted: "Leighton Aspell
is conscious and on his way to Brighton Hospital. We
wish him all the best."
Clerk of the course Edward Arkell added: "He was
taken directly to hospital in Brighton and he was
conscious when he left the racecourse."
Intilaaq heads next to Newbury
Intilaaq will next run in the Group Three Dubai Duty
Free Legacy Cup at Newbury on September 19.
The Roger Varian-trained three-year-old bounced back
from a disappointing run in the 2000 Guineas to win a
Listed race at Newbury from Consort.
Next time out in the Group Three Rose of Lancaster
Stakes at Haydock he blew the opposition away, winning
by five lengths.
An impressive display in Berkshire could see him enter
the frame for the Qipco Champions Stakes at Ascot, for
which he is quoted at 10/1 by bookmakers Sky Bet.
Owner Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager Angus
Gold said: "Intilaaq is going to go to Newbury for the race
known as the Arc Trial (Legacy Cup).
"Depending on how he goes there will dictate whether
we are still looking at a race like the Champion Stakes.
"We'll find out if he is still on the upward curve it
looked like he was on at Haydock."
Tullius up for Champion Stakes
Having debated for so long whether Tullius truly
stayed 10 furlongs, connections are now adamant he is
most effective over that trip.
The Andrew Balding-trained seven-year-old won the
Group Two York Stakes over an extended mile and a
quarter but dropped back down to a mile for the
Sovereign Stakes last time out.
He was no match for Kodi Bear at Salisbury, but
Jimmy Fortune reported afterwards Tullius found
everything happening too quickly and that he should be
stepped back up in trip. The Qipco Champion Stakes at
Ascot in October is now his ultimate aim.
"Tullius will run in the Joel Stakes on September 25
next and hopefully that will tee him up for the Champion
Stakes," said Sam Hoskins, racing manager for owners
Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds.
Shadow looming over Doncaster
Newmarket handler Paul D'Arcy is hoping to run smart
two-year-old filly Shadow Hunter in Friday's Group Two
Fly Aer Lingus From Doncaster Sheffield Flying Childers
Stakes at Doncaster after her 33/1 success in the Listed
Roses Stakes at York last month.
That York victory, over five furlongs on August 22,
may have shocked punters but his trainer insisted he
was not surprised after Shadow Hunter finished a fast-
closing fourth in the Listed St Hugh's Stakes at the same
trip after being slow away at Newbury on August 14.
The daughter of Arcano finished third on debut behind
Lumiere in a six-furlong maiden at Newmarket on July 9.
D'Arcy said: "Shadow Hunter has come out of York
well and is a likely runner in the Flying Childers Stakes. It
wasn't a surprise what she did at York.
"I've always thought she was a very good filly and that
is why I ran her at Newmarket first time out. That is
probably the best fillies' maiden run so far this year, but
she came back with sore shins which probably explains
why she didn't get the trip that day.
