Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : October 2nd 2015 Contents Zzoro, rated 84, has an obvious oppor-
tunity tonight of making it fourth time lucky
in the 2-y-o Maiden Stakes over a mile of
Wolverhampton Tapeta; drawn widest,
trained by out of form Charles Hills!
Apart from a somewhat fluky, surprise,
success by Dancetrack, when racing wide on
better stands-side ground at Haydock last
weekend, Hills managed a disappointing total
last month and very nearly landed on the
dreaded cold list again.
Ironically Hills inherited Zzoro from veteran
Clive Brittain, due to retire next month and
himself a failure; serious punters had long
given the old boy a swerve and few have
much time for the 37-year-old Lambourn
trainer whose tally of 60 in eleven months is
Despite what you read in key publications
the language of professional-minded punters
is the only one worth heeding; as a serious
bettor myself I ve no desire whatsoever to
back horses trained by Hills or Brittain. When
they have winners you can afford to lose!
Both once-raced pair Invocation (Alan King)
and Lord George (Fanshawe) shaped promis-
ingly and were placed; likelihood is a deal of
improvement but there are three places avail-
able for Zzoro and surely Dane O Neill will
steer this Manduro colt into one of them.
It will be fascinating, with jockeyship at a
With no other juvenile races once-raced,
Luca Cumani-trained Bess Of Hardwick is
nominated for the Maiden Stakes over twelve
furlongs; despite an absence Adam Kirby s
mount is an obvious selection in a weak race,
by process of elimination.
There isn t one two-year-old event on two
cards for Ascot this weekend! Incidentally it s
getting quite firm-ish at Longchamp and, sig-
nificantly, Treve has eased in the betting for
the Arc these last few days...!
Hope Jack Hobbs runs.

Gary Moore s 2014 Champion Chase winner
Sire De Grugy could reappear as early as next
weekend at Chepstow.
Not much went right for the nine-year-old last
season, but he did win at the Welsh venue before
heading to Cheltenham in defence of his crown.
He was only fourth to Dodging Bullets there and
was an early casualty at Aintree over two and a half
"Sire De Grugy seems in great form and looks as
good as ever," said Moore in his Betway blog.
"He s actually carrying more condition this year
than he s ever done before and is about ten or 15
kilos heavier than usual. Whether he s just doing
better or if it s middle-aged spread, I m not so sure!
"He may strip a bit lighter in the coming weeks,
but one thing for sure is he s definitely bigger now
than he s ever been.
"The plan at this stage is to run him at Chepstow
on Sunday week (October 11) over two miles and
three furlongs (John Ayres Memorial Handicap Chase)
as long as the ground is good to soft or softer.
"They do say there is rain coming in at the end
of next week so that looks our most likely starting
point. The soft ground is just so important to him
and his work is so much better when there is rain
"His schooling has been fantastic which is impor-
tant because it was his jumping that let him down
last year. He came back really sore from Aintree last
spring, but he s had plenty of physio and seems A1
"We were always playing catch up last season
and this time around we ve had no hold-ups or
anything like that.
"If he doesn t go to Chepstow, we ve got the
option of the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter in the first
week of November, or even a race like the Shloer
Chase at Cheltenham - we ll just keep a close eye
on the weather."
Stablemate Traffic Fluide, third in a Grade One
at Aintree, will run in either the same Chepstow
race or the Haldon Gold Cup but the two will be
If the promising Zonderland runs again this
season it will be in the Horris Hill Stakes at
Newbury on October 24.
Run this year as the Worthington s Whizz Kids
Stakes, the Group Three is the only remaining
option for Clive Cox s promising juvenile.
A striking winner on his debut at Kempton, a
lack of experience appeared to catch him out in
a rough renewal of the Somerville Tattersall Stakes
at Newmarket when he was beaten just over a
length into fourth by Sanus Per Aquam.
"His inexperience showed, I felt," said Chris
Richardson, managing director of Zonderland s
owners, Cheveley Park Stud.
"It was his first run on turf and and obviously
the first time he had been put under real pressure
and I thought that was all that caught him out.
"The others had more experience and when
one horse leant on him he lost his balance. If the
ground stays reasonable he could run in the Horris
Hill, but if it turns soft I don t think he d run.
"We d certainly be happy to take on the horses
that finished in front of him at Newmarket again.
"He s certainly got the talent and he looks more
like his grandmother, Russian Rhythm, every time
I see him. I hope he wins as many nice races."
At the other end of age scale is Cheveley Park s
Kingsgate Native, who runs in the Albert Bartlett
Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. Now 10, retirement
is not on his agenda just yet.
