This arrangement, she explained,
leaves little room for mistakes and
ensures that the customer gets what
he/she stipulated. Being meticulous is
what her customers pay for, Ramnath-
Skerritt said, and this has been her
proven track record for the last four
years working with YUMA.
"We power the section and work
hard on orchestrating the total Carnival
experience. If it means booking hotels,
securing car rentals, and even party
tickets upon requests way ahead of the
season or events, then it's what we do,"
she said enthusiastically.
She becomes animated speaking
about Carnival, mas making, production
and managing, all of which she has
done at one time or other. The demure
and soft-spoken Ramnath-Skerritt
admitted that she seems an enigma to
some of her co-workers, who still can't
see her as two sides to one coin.
"I am a banker who loves the part
of my culture that is mas making and
playing mas. It's that simple," she rea-

choice after also playing for years
together. My children are so familiar
with our living room being turned into
a makeshift mas camp, and it's expected
that one or both of us play," she said.
Her 18-year-old sons know the joy
of seeing a creation evolve under their

the footsteps of their parents, Ram-

"Their education takes first place.
They can do what they want as far as
Carnival is concerned when that (edu-

This is certainly one masquerader
who is as serious about her mas making
as she is about her banking.
is that important to a leader?
Because those around a leader
determine the success level of that
leader. And there is no success
Finally, in order to address the
leadership crisis, leaders must be
continual learners. Leaders cannot
cease growing, rising and expand-
ing. Good leaders know that it is
important to lead by example and
from in front. That they must
"keep learning to keep leading."
(John Maxwell, Leadership Gold.)
Many leaders have stopped leading
without knowing it because they
have stopped developing them-
selves. They have stopped learning
from others better than themselves.
Every person reading this article
has the unique opportunity to take
their leadership to another level.

While there are many issues plagu-
ing societies worldwide, one common
and accepted fact is that there is a
global leadership crisis. The good news
is that organisations, governments,
communities and families need not
be guilty of having poor leaders. As
we all know, the absence of good lead-
ership exposes all areas of life to the
ills we see and read about today.
Those of us who have been fortunate
to be trained and certified as
teachers/coaches and speakers with the
John Maxwell Team are excited to share
the good news of transformational lead-
ership that is possible in T&T.
The leadership crisis referred to can
be resolved if good leaders develop
faithful followers to become great lead-
ers. Good leaders understand the need
to invest in the development of people.
It was John Maxwell who said "leaders
surround themselves with leaders." It
lightens the burden of leadership. Some
leaders seek out followers, not leaders.
Good leaders have a passion to trans-
form followers to leaders so that they
in turn can influence the world. Good
leaders understand that when they
develop followers into great leaders that
goes a very long way towards increasing
The exciting challenge for us as good
leaders is to grow our followers to
become better than ourselves. Andrew
Carnegie said, "I wish to have as my
epitaph, Here lies a man who was wise
enough to bring into his service men
who knew more than me.'"
This is the way for an upward and
progressive trajectory. Influence others
to be better skilled, more knowledge-
able, better character, greater leaders
than we are.
Many companies suffer employee
attrition at an alarming rate. The cost
to hire, fire and re-hire is astronomical
over a three-year period or any period
for that matter. Good leaders nurture
and come alongside those whom they
lead to keep them growing in the game.
Once again, John Maxwell noted in his
book Developing the Leaders Around
You, "The truly successful ones who
are in the top one per cent all have one
thing in common. They know that
acquiring and keeping good people is
a leader's most important task."
Another noteworthy quote from
Maxwell in the same book, "If you are
a leader and wish to develop leaders:
1. Appreciate them for who they are.
2. Believe that they will do their best.
3. Praise their accomplishments.
4. Accept your personal responsibility
to them as leaders." That final injunction
is key; own up to your responsibility
to develop the people around you. Why
