SEOUL---FIFA presidential con-
tender Chung Mong-joon said yes-
terday he is facing a 19-year sus-
pension by the ethics committee
of the world football body for
alleged ethics breaches surrounding
South Korea s failed bid for the
2022 World Cup, and also for open-
ly criticizing the committee.
The South Korean billionaire
denied any wrongdoing and accused
the committee of acting as a "hit
man" of current FIFA President Sepp
Blatter who Chung says is attempt-
ing to damage his candidacy.
"The true danger is that they
won t stop at sabotaging only my
candidacy but also destructing FIFA s
presidential election and FIFA itself,"
the former FIFA vice president said
in a news conference in Seoul.
Chung said the ethics committee
is planning to hit him soon with a
15-year suspension for proposing,
in letters to members of FIFA s exec-
utive committee, a $777 million fund
to finance football development proj-
ects around the world.
Although South Korea was then
still in the race for the 2022 event,
Chung said his proposals were in
line with FIFA s rules. He said FIFA
had already investigated the issue
in 2010 and determined the matter
as closed, but reopened the case
after he declared his presidential
candidacy in August. Chung also
said the committee threatened to
hit him with an additional four-year
suspension for "defaming" the com-
mittee after he questioned its
"The fundamental reason why I
am being targeted is that I aimed
straight at the existing power struc-
ture of FIFA," said Chung, who
believes his candidacy could be jeop-
ardised if the committee confirms
the suspensions after a hearing.
FIFA has set a February 26 election
to replace Blatter, who announced
his departure in June amid mounting
pressure to reform after widespread
allegations of corruption within FIFA
Contenders are required to secure
nominations from five federations
to officially register as candidates
by the October 26 deadline. UEFA
President Michel Platini of France
and Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jor-
dan have also declared their candi-
dacy for football s top office.
Chung, the billionaire scion of the
Hyundai business group, was a FIFA
vice president for 17 years, and was
once considered a candidate to suc-
ceed Blatter before losing his seat
in 2011, to Prince Ali.
He was a key figure in helping
South Korea land the right to co-
host the 2002 World Cup with
Japan, and has been a longtime critic
of Blatter, whom he described in a
memoir published in 2011 as a dic-
tatorial "little brat." (AP)

from FIFA sponsors to quit imme-
diately, President Sepp Blatter is

The 79-year-old Blatter is deter-
mined to stay in power until an
emergency election in February,

tigation in Switzerland over alleged

Returning to his more familiar
role as a mediator, Blatter gathered
the Palestinian and Saudi Arabian
federations at FIFA s Zurich head-
quarters in an attempt to resolve a
spat over a game venue.
"Blatter is functioning well and
in a good mood with common
sense, a sense of humor," Palestinian
Football Union president Jibril
Rajoub told The Associated Press.
According to Rajoub, Blatter halt-
ed a ruling by FIFA s World Cup
committee to order an October 13
World Cup qualifier between the
Palestinians and Saudi Arabians to
be relocated from the West Bank
to neighboring Jordan.
The Palestinians accuse Saudi
Arabia, which hosted the first leg
in Riyadh, of being wary of appear-
ing too close to Israel by going
through its security, leading to the
decision to use a neutral venue.
"Blatter was clear, saying the
decision that was circulated was
invalid and illegal and that each
national association has the right
to play at home, including Pales-
tine," Rajoub said.
The game has been postponed
after Blatter s intervention, Rajoub
said, explaining: "They need more
time for deliberation and discus-
FIFA did not respond to requests
for comment. Meanwhile, the Inter-
national Olympic Committee has
told the AP that Blatter will no
longer serve as one of its represen-
tative on the World Anti-Doping
Agency s Foundation Board.
Although Blatter s 16-year-term
as an IOC member ended in August
after he did not seek re-election,
the 79-year-old president s term
on the WADA board ran through
the end of 2015.
"The IOC is in the process of
choosing a new member of the
WADA Foundation Board," the
Olympic body said in a statement.
"Mr Blatter is no longer an IOC
member and will not represent the
IOC during this time."
WADA said it is waiting to hear
from the IOC who will replace Blat-
ter on its decision-making body.
"We understand that Mr. Blatter
is no longer an IOC Member,"
WADA said. "We also understand
that he will no longer be represent-
ing the IOC in one of its four
Olympic Movement positions on
WADA s foundation board."
FIFA is due to elect a new pres-
ident in February after Blatter s
decision to step down, soon after
being re-elected in May for a fifth
term amid Swiss and US investi-
gations into soccer bribery. (AP)
