Jan Steen really should make it fourth
time lucky in the Maiden Stakes over six
furlongs of good to soft Brighton today
when Oisin Murphy is again booked for
the progressive David Coakley-trained
This opener is moderate but Jan Steen
certainly seems to be going the right way;
last time out, 5th of eleven, beaten only five
lengths by Zhui Feng, represents strong
Only possible time-handicap danger is
Pink Martini, close up sixth, beaten two
lengths by Kashtan over the minimum trip
on Wolverhampton Tapeta, two days ago.
Likelihood is Joseph Tuite s charge will
be a non-runner but there again leading
apprentice Tom Marquand is booked; hope-
fully Pink Martini will run because it will
make for an interesting race and make the
price better about 73-rated Jan Steen.
Incidentally there are also two well-bred
newcomers trained by Richard Fahey and
Mark Johnston; this betting market will be
intriguing and probably informative.
Marquand is also aboard consistent, hith-
erto luckless, Albe Back in the Maiden
Stakes over a mile for his guv nor Richard
Hannon but preference is Michael Bell-
trained Duck A L Orange and Jamie Spencer;
he s ridden this Duke Of Marmalade colt
There is also an eight-race programme
scheduled for Chelmsford polytrack where
Hope Cove comes out best-in for the
nursery handicap over six furlongs.
Hope Cove was a decisive winner at Red-
car and achieved a career-best when run-
ner-up to Goodwood Zodiac, beaten two
lengths, around Epsom.
They were seven furlongs races but I ve
always maintained that is a distance tailor-
made for speedsters; this drop back in trip
could be ideal and Andrea Atzeni is a bonus.
Jockeyship is key, this season has taught
me so much about the value of proficiency
Former champion trainer Glenn Mendez
has a two-pronged attack in Saturday s fea-
ture event over 1,400 metres on the truf
track at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. Mendez
will saddle Secret American which will carry
top-weight of 57 kilos and Cat s Heir in the
$50,000 purse feature.
Wilmer Galviz will be aboard Secret Amer-
ican and Naim Samaroo will partner Cat s
Heir will tote 54.5 kilos. Also in the contest
will be last year s Derby winner Momentum
which has been gathering momentum at
exercise and could go close with his impost
of 54 kilo. He will have the assistance of two
kilos claiming apprentice Richard Angnoo
and must be respected.
When entries were taken yesterday a total
of 99 horses took entry for the Arima Race
Club s (ARC) Day 36 eight race card.
Post time for the first event is 12.45pm.
Below are the declared runners, riders and
weights for the ARC Day 36 programme.
The Ascot Gold Cup and the JNwine.com Cham-
pion Chase at Down Royal are potential comeback
targets for the long-absent Cheltenham Festival
winner O Faolains Boy.
Narrow winner of the RSA Chase at Prestbury
Park in March of last year, the Rebecca Curtis-
trained eight-year-old has been sidelined by injury
since disappointing at Aintree the following month.
However, Curtis has been delighted with how he
has recovered and plans to give him one run before
a likely tilt at the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury
on November 28.
"He s in great form and it s just a shame the
ground seems to be getting quicker everywhere at
the moment as he s a horse that has to have soft
ground," said Curtis.
"There s a possibility he could go to Ffos Las on
Saturday for a racecourse gallop if the ground is safe
enough and then we ll look to get him out somewhere
at the end of October.
"There s the Ascot Gold Cup (October 31) and
the race at Down Royal on the same day, but it will
be ground dependent. After that we ll look towards
the Hennessy. That s his main target."
The Newport handler also had news of leading
staying hurdler At Fishers Cross.
Last seen finishing a creditable fourth in the World
Hurdle at Cheltenham, the eight-year-old is unlikely
to return until the second half of the season.
Oisin Murphy in Qatar boost
Oisin Murphy will ride the "vast majority" of
Qatar Racing s British runners next season.
Murphy has been attached with Sheikh Fahad s
powerful operation since last August, but the 20-
year-old will assume greater control once first-
choice jockey Andrea Atzeni leaves his position at
the end of the year to become retained rider for
Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum.
David Redvers, racing manager for Qatar Racing,
told the Guardian: "He will not be our first jockey,
as such, but he will ride the vast majority of our
runners in Britain.
Broken collarbone for Jones
Jockey Liam Jones faces at least six weeks on the
sidelines after breaking his collarbone in a fall at
Leicester on Tuesday.
Jones was injured when he pulled up his mount
Charlton Heights, who had suffered an injury during
the Whissendine Selling Stakes over seven furlongs.
"He s going to be out for six to eight weeks unfor-
tunately," said his agent, Paul Clarke.
"These things happen. He went from the track
to hospital and was discharged around 7pm last
night, but they ve told him to expect to be laid off
for that amount of time.
Dolniya retired after Arc injury
Group One-winning filly Dolniya has been retired
due to an injury suffered in the Prix de l Arc de Tri-
Alain de Royer-Dupre s four-year-old travelled
nicely in the Longchamp showpiece until she was
badly impeded and stumbled in the closing stages.
Connections had hoped to run in the Japan Cup
later this year, but her racing days are now over.
"She had a bump in the Arc and unfortunately
she suffered an injury," said Royer-Dupre.
"She has a small stress fracture, which means she
will now go to stud. We had hoped to go to Japan,
but now she is finished. It s very bad news."
Dolniya retires having won five of her 12 career
starts, winning over £2.7million in win and place
The undoubted highlight of her career came at
Meydan earlier this year when she ran out a brilliant
winner of the Dubai Sheema Classic, beating Arc
