William "Bill" Schultz Jr is one of many
expats called to duty by their head offices,
whether it be in Europe, the Caribbean,
Latin America or North America, to head
up and further develop their company s
business interests here in T&T. He took
up the position in May 2014.
The Sunday Guardian has previously
featured the likes of expats Luis Prado of
Shell and Anya Schnoor of Scotiabank.
Schultz is an international insurance
executive with more than three decades
of experience managing operations across
the United States, Latin America, Europe
and Asia. In his role as CEO and managing

Prior to joining Pan-American Life,
Schultz served as American International
Group s (AIG) senior vice president and
director, Foreign Credit, responsible for
that company s credit related insurance
business in 60 countries. He is also a Cer-

Q: Where were you born and where
did you grow up?
A: I was born in Newark, New Jersey,
and grew up in a small town called
Mine Hill---the site of one of the very
first iron ore mines in the United States.
At what schools/institutions did you
receive your education, including primary
After going to elementary schools in Mine
Hill, I graduated from nearby Dover High
School. I obtained my college degree from
Bucknell University (Lewisburg, Pennsylvania)
in economics and education.
When and how did you get into the busi-
ness of insurance?
I taught geography and civics for one school
year and then decided to change gears. The
Hartford Insurance Group was looking for
young people with a background in sports
and education, which I happened to have,
having played baseball and American football
at high school and university. I joined them
in New York City as a Group Employee Benefit
sales representative and here I am many years
later, having moved to Chicago then Hong
Kong, back to the USA.
I moved from a purely sales oriented role
to sales management and eventually to man-
aging profit centres on a local, regional and
Why T&T, a small country with so many
insurance companies already established?
Simply put, we see tremendous potential
in the Caribbean market, which includes T&T
of course, but also our operations in the Dutch
Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, Barbados and
Cayman Islands. We feel that our history,
financial strength, and strategic focus on our
core lines of business---Life, Accident and
Health---set us apart in the industry land-
What is your strategy to gain sustainable
market share in T&T?
Pan-American Life s strategic vision centres
on competitive products that meet the needs
of our clients, outstanding customer service,
and the financial strength and stability that
has allowed us to build a nearly 105-year her-
itage of promises kept.
We ve launched a number of new products
on both the individual and group sides. These
include Pan-American Life Access, a universal
life product available in US$ and TT$; Pan-
American Private Client, our individual Inter-
national Major Medical product.
There are also some very interesting oppor-
tunities in the pension area through the group
side and through the upcoming launch of our
Corporate Annuity. And last but not least, we
have just launched a new company in Cayman
Islands to focus initially on local and multi-
national group business.
How many hours a week do you spend on
work? What about family/hobbies?
I m usually in the office from 6 am to 6
pm during the week. After dinner, I ll usually
spend some time on emails. On weekends, I
try to disconnect a bit more. I m an avid golfer
as is my wife, Lisa, so we often play on Sat-
urday and Sunday mornings.
We also spend a lot of time sightseeing and
exploring Trinidad. We ve had a lot of great
experiences and made many good friends. We
have two adult children both of whom are in
the USA and doing very well in their respective
