Curtis "Sadam" Brereton has his eyes set
on the Brooklyn 5k on December 5 as well
as the Central Park 5k which is carded for
December 20 in the United States and he
feels he can medal at both events in the US.
Sadam, as he is affectionately known, cur-
rently dominates middle-distance running
in the T&T for Masters over 50 years old.
Only recently he snatched gold medals at
the T&T Association of Retired Persons
(TTARP) 5k in September of 19 minutes and
06 seconds as well as the RBC 5K later in
October in an unofficial time of 18 minutes
and 06 seconds.
But yesterday he told the T&T Guardian
his time in the RBC event could earn him
the right to contest the World Games in Aus-
tralia next year. The qualifying time for the
World Games is 18 minutes and 50 seconds
and Sadam explained he is only awaiting
official documentation from race officials to
confirm whether he will be on his way to
Australia next year.
Brereton has intensified his training regime
for the events in the US by sometimes running
from his native River Estate home in Diego
Martin to the Queen s Park Savannah in Port-
of-Spain and back at the weekends.
Apart from this, he trains from 4 pm to
6 pm daily at the Savannah.
"I feel that the times I am running now
can assure me a medal at the events in the
United States. I have also been training really
hard and therefore I am confident of at least
medalling," Sadam said. Strangely it will be
the first time he will be competing in the
events but he will certainly be up against
runners from all over the world.
Brereton is also a double gold medallist at
the Central American and Caribbean Games
(CAC) last year in the 800 metres and the
pentathlon; and at the same games (CAC)
he also earned silver medal in the 1,500
metres for Masters 50-54.
In the 800 metres he disposed of a large
competitive field to post a time of two min-
utes and 18 seconds but could only settle for
the runner-up position in the 1,500 metres
in a decent time of four minutes and 57 sec-
onds. He said he was proud of his achieve-
ments to date at the CAC but will be working
even harder to reduce the times he clocked
last year. The CAC Games are held every
two years which means Brereton will not be
asked to defend his titles.
However, he said that he wants to make
his name in the Masters 55-59 age bracket
which he will be contesting next year at the
World Games. At this event he will contest
the Cross Country and the 800 metres.
Brereton also boasts that he is the Tobago
Falcons 50-54 age group 800 metres cham-
pion, a feat he achieved back in 2013 in a
time of two minutes, 05.24 seconds.
T&T s reigning Olympic men s javelin
gold medallist Keshorn Walcott took some
time off his pre-season training for next
year s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil to visit the Santa Cruz United Foot-
ball Academy at the Brian Lara Recreational
Grounds, Santa Cruz, on Saturday.
Walcott s visit was part of the Academy s
mentorship programme that educated young
footballers. Walcott s gold medal at just 19
years old at the London Olympics in 2012
saw him break a 60-year drought, becoming
the first non-European to win the men s
javelin since 1952.
He also became the country s second gold
medallist at an Olympics, following on the
heels of sprinter Hasely Crawford who
claimed gold in the 100 metres dash at the
Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. He
explained that he threw coconuts and man-
goes on the beach in his native community
of Toco as part of his preparation for Olympic
glory. The 22-year-old encouraged young
players dreaming of becoming professional
footballers at home or abroad, to be disci-
The Santa Cruz United Football Academy
is run by head coach and president Ricardo
Brizam and a dedicated staff. The Academy
is open to youngsters between the ages of
5- 16. It holds training sessions on Wednes-
days and Thursdays between 5--7 pm, as well
as on Saturdays from 9 to 11.30 am.
