According to Nasser
Mustapha, president of the
Trinidad Muslim League,
the media have to do their part
to stop Trinidadians joining the
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
(ISIS). "The Government needs
to address this issue at the level
of the school and the media," he
told the T&T Guardian last week.
As a journalist, I agree that I
have probably not done enough
to educate Islamic fundamental-
ists about ISIS, whereas
Mustapha has spent his entire
adult life teaching that Muslims
are not allowed to kill anyone
who does not deserve it. Indeed,
his fellow Muslim leader Zabar
Mohammed Baksh, who is chair-
man of the Caribbean Hajj, said
that "Islam is one of the most
tolerant religions in the world."
This is why it is Islam which
first allowed gay men to become
priests---no, wait, that was the
British Anglican church. But it is
Islam which elevated women to
be religious leaders---wait, that
was the Presbyterians. But Islam
does say that all paths lead to
God---no, that s Hinduism. Any-
way, Islam holds that violence in
all forms is wrong---or is that
incontrovertible fact that Islam is
a very tolerant religion, once
people do nothing to offend
Muslims such as drawing car-
toons of the Prophet Muham-
mad; burning copies of the
Qur an; converting to another
religion; wearing tight skirts; try-
ing to make the marriage of 12-
year-old girls illegal; or eating
pork with rum while being gay in
a Carnival fete.
"We are the best place in the
world to practise Islam," Baksh
told the T&T Guardian. But one
Trinidadian man featured in the
recruitment video posted by ISIS
last week said: "I cannot sit and
watch my children grow up in
this land where they cannot
practise their Islam 100 per
cent." And, indeed, the public
outrage caused by another video
of a man beating a woman in a
bar must offend all true Mus-
lims, since Sura 4:34 of the
Qur an instructs that a man
should beat his wife who he
thinks is horning him.
So it seems that these local
Muslims prefer to go fight with
foreign terrorists, rather than stay
and help develop terrorism local-
ly. Obviously, as long as most
Trinidadian Islamists think like
this, the Muslimeen s failed coup
attempt, in which a mere 20
people died and only one hostage
(who wasn t even beheaded), will
remain a perpetual embarrass-
ment to young Muslims who
aspire to be terrifying terrorists.
However, I still take Dr
Mustapha s point. But, as a jour-
nalist, I have a professional obli-
gation to present both sides of a
story. So, in today s column I list
some pros and cons of joining
ISIS, in the hope that those
Muslims who are thinking about
doing so will be exposed to all
the arguments before deciding
whether to kill the unbelievers
overseas, or to kill rival gang

The very leaders who are now trying
to discourage people from joining ISIS,
are the very same leaders who would go
to a lecture in a mosque where the Imam
or Moulana would preach unfounded
doctrines and rituals, unqur'anic beliefs
and punishments that is not advocated
nor supported by the Qur'an. And they
would sit and absorb every false belief
without saying or doing anything about
it. The majority of muslims fail to ques-
tion their inherited practices and beliefs
as they forsake the study of the Qur'an
in favour of the blind practices of their
forefathers or follow the instructions of
their imams without question, being
blindly led by the majority.
Most muslims are of the belief that it
is righteous to follow arabs and to look
like them by having long beards, long
gowns with towel wrap around their
head, when Qur'an says it is not even
righteous to turn your faces to the east
or west, but it is righteous to believe in
Allah and the last day.
To believe in the Angels and the Book
and the Messengers and to spend your
money for kin, for orphans, for the needy,
for the wayfarer and for those who ask.
And why would any muslim want to
imitate the arabs when Allah in the
Qur'an said that the arabs are the worst
in rejection and hypocrisy, and most
likely not to know the limits of what
Allah has revealed to his messenger.
Allah is knower wise.
It is the arabs who built a massive
mosque over the grave of the prophet
along with two of his companions. When
this same prophet cursed the jews and
the Christians for worshipping in a build-
ing that has graves in it.
It is the arabs who invented fake say-
ings of the prophet and divided the reli-
gion into thousands of sects. Yet we
send our sons and daughters to the arab
countries to learn about the religion
when we always have Allah with us as
the best teacher speaking to us through
revelations of the Qur'an.
Some of these very leaders who know
the religion have allowed these fake
teachings of the arabs to flourish and sti-
fle the guidance of Allah.
They have allowed a monster to grow
