A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has
struck off Japan s south-western coast,
triggering a small tsunami.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said
a 30cm (1ft) tsunami was registered on
the southern Nakanoshima island, part
of Kagoshima prefecture.
There were no immediate reports of
damage or injuries.
A tsunami warning issued for
Kagoshima and Satsunan islands was
later lifted. The quake happened at a
depth of about 10km (six miles).
The US Geological Survey said it was
some 159km south-west of the town of
In 2011, a massive earthquake caused
a tsunami that left more than 18,000
people dead or missing in north-eastern
Japan. Some 230,000 people have yet
to return to their home towns since the
A US air strike has targeted the
leader of the Islamic State (IS) group
in Libya and probably killed him, the
Iraqi national Abu Nabil, also known
as Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al-Zubaydi,
was a "long-time al-Qaeda operative",
The strike took place on Friday and
targeted a compound in Derna.
The Pentagon said the strike showed
that it would go after IS leaders "wher-
ever they operate".
News agencies have quoted US offi-
cials saying they are confident Nabil
"Nabil s death will degrade Isil s abil-
ity to meet the group s objectives in
Libya, including recruiting new Isil
members, establishing bases in Libya,
and planning external attacks on the
United States," Pentagon spokesman
Peter Cook said, using a different name
for the group.
He said the operation had been
authorised before terrorist attacks in
Paris on Friday evening that IS claimed
Cook added that Nabil may have
been the IS spokesman pictured in a
February 2015 video showing the appar-
ent murder of Coptic Christians in
Libya remains in chaos four years
after the overthrow of Muammar
Gaddafi, and is being fought over by
a number of groups, including IS.
It has launched high-profile attacks
in the mostly lawless North African
country, and gained a foothold in key
towns and cities, including Sirte.
The strike on Nabil was the first
against an IS leader in Libya, the Pen-
tagon said. (BBC)
At least 55 people have been
killed after days of torrential rain
in the southeastern Indian state
of Tamil Nadu.
The relentless rain has caused
widespread flooding. Many of those
who died were either killed by elec-
trocution or crushed when walls
collapsed on them.
The capital of the state, Chennai,
is one of the places which has been
Over the last seven days, 492
mm of rain has fallen on the city.
This is well above the average of
353 mm that is expected in the
entire month of November.
The deluge brought the city to
a standstill. Many of the roads were
impassable and schools were closed
Train tracks were submerged in
places, bringing trains to a halt, and
a number of flights were disrupted.
Determined pedestrians had to
wade through knee-deep water as
they navigated the streets.
Unlike many parts of India,
Chennai receives most of its rain
in the winter months. The wet
weather is brought by the northeast
monsoon, with the wettest months
being from October to December.
Over the past few weeks, an
active area of low pressure has per-
sisted to the east of India. This has
threatened to become a tropical
cyclone on a number of occasions,
but so far has failed to do so.
Although the system has not
become a cyclone, it has still inten-
sified the rain over southeastern
India and Sri Lanka, bringing pro-
longed and heavy downpours.
The system is showing no signs
of easing over the next few days,
so more torrential rain is inevitable.
