Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : November 21st 2015 Contents Paul Nicholls looks to Silvini-
aco Conti as he tries to extend
his fruitful association with the
Betfair Chase at Haydock today.
While it may not hold the same
historical ties as the King George
VI Chase and the Cheltenham Gold
Cup, the three-mile showpiece
usually attracts some of the best
staying chasers in the country and
is one the Ditcheat handler has
Since its inception in 2005,
Nicholls has pocketed the Grade
One contest a remarkable six times
---with Kauto Star providing four
of those victories.
The dual Gold Cup winner s
final victory back in 2011 at the
age of 11 provides particularly
happy memories for Nicholls.
He said: "That was a big day
for everybody. It was an incredible
day with people cheering him
before, during and after the race.
It was just amazing.
"The year after he was out there
parading and Silviniaco Conti was
winning his first one, so it has
been a good race for us."
Nicholls chances of extending
his enviable record this year look
more than favourable as defending
champion Silviniaco Conti heads
the ante-post market.
Although he has some way to
go to equal the exploits of his for-
mer stablemate, the nine-year-old
bids to move a step closer to
matching the efforts of the 16-
times Grade One winner by taking
the £200,000 contest for a third
After finishing a staying-on sec-
ond in his prep run over hurdles
at Kempton earlier this month,
Nicholls is optimistic he has the
dual King George winner cherry-
ripe for the weekend.
He said: "He ran very well the
other day at Kempton in light of
the situation we were in. We had
a whole heap of trouble with them
(sarcoids, a common type of skin
tumour affecting horses) last year.
Alyaa will surely make it third time lucky in a
two-year-old Maiden Stakes over five furlongs of
Lingfdield polytrack today, by default!
None of five rivals have any chance whatsoever
with Alyaa judged on her sixth to Only Mine in a
six furlongs listed race at Newmarket last month;
well beaten but far from disgraced and this twice-
raced, Conrad Allen-trained Iffraaj filly crossed the
line only two lengths behind hot-favourite, Price-
Perhaps Clive Cox s charge failed to hit her best
form but other principals definitely ran right up to
their marks; we re totally convinced that form is
solid, and bears close inspection.
There is no reason why Alyaa can t run similarly
and a drop back in trip should suit her much better,
especialy at this low-level; this is a bet and though
veteran jockey Jimmy Quinn doesn t figure as a
favourite nowadays he s still able to do the biz
when required. Don t oppose.
After watching three juvenile races at the Surrey
venue we ll head to Wolverhampton where Richard
winning machine Fahey-trained Dose should pay
for expenses by beating ten rivals in the Maiden
Stakes over an extended mile of Tapeta, which has
consistently received favourable reviews.
Twice-raced Dose improved when third over seven
furlongs of this surface eleven days ago, beaten just
over two lengths by our nap, Izmir; a creditable
Certainly good enough to go close but there are
a couple of Godolphin-owned newcomers; we ve
been running into a few super-breds which have
been different gravy during the last month and so
we ll have to advise an each-way bet.
Pointless not acknowledging that the boys in
blue have so much firepower!
There is also an intriguing five-runner six furlongs
nursery and an obvious opportunity for bottom-
weight Murdanova; the price should be right as this
Zebedee colt is from the unfashionable yard of
Ronald Thompson at Doncaster.

no hiding place!"
It is the first time Murennan has
been to Barbados, but he has partaken
in jockeys challenges in Mauritius and

local jockeys, who have different riding
styles and viewpoints. You can learn
a fair bit from riding overseas," he
