The oil price dictates the eco-
nomic wellbeing of our country. In
T&T, high oil prices bring work
opportunities and government
make-work and pay-to-learn pro-
grammes. Those with low literacy
can make a living.
Declining oil prices bring job losses
and the drying up of government
programmes. The blow falls heavily
on the less literate as they compete
with the more literate for fewer jobs
and fewer social programmes.
You can cushion this blow in two
ways. First, encourage adults you
know to come to Alta to improve
their literacy and thus their self-
reliance. They will be better prepared
for the hard times ahead and better
equipped to make their own work
opportunities if needed.
In recognition of the economic
difficulties ahead, Alta will take in
new students in the first week of
January 2016 in classes with spare
Alta usually opens our classes to
new students only at the start of
the academic year in September and
October, but this one-time 2016
opportunity is possible since Alta s
registration was undersubscribed
due to the September 7 General
The other way to help our people
weather the coming economic
downturn is to volunteer to teach
adults to read and write at ALTA.

to becoming an Alta tutor.

PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars Steel
Orchestra is celebrating the Silver
Jubilee of Parang & Steel this year.
Silver is the metal ascribed to the
25th anniversary because of its "radi-
ance and brilliance"---two words that
vividly describe the annual event
that Silver Stars has been presenting
to the public for the past quarter
century during the festive Christmas
The 2015 Parang and Steel series
begins this Saturday (December 5)
at the orchestra s pan theatre on Tra-
garete Road, Newtown, from 8 pm.
It ends on Saturday, December 19.
"This year we are celebrating our
25th anniversary," said spokesperson
Chanel Pouchet, "and each night
patrons can look forward to per-
formances offering a mix of parang
music, traditional Christmas music,
parang soca and of course PCS
Nitrogen Silver Stars. In honour of
the celebration we will be treating
our loyal patrons to surprise per-
formances, special giveaways, door
prizes, and lots more.
"We take this opportunity to thank
everyone for their support over the
years, and look forward to celebrating
with them another Silver Stars mile-

prises Baron (Timothy Watkins), 2013
Digicel Rising Star winner Ancil Val-
ley, Los Dimanicos parang group, DJ
Kern Crosby, and host band PCS
Nitrogen Silver Stars.
Featured performers on December
12 are Rikki Jai (Samraj Jaimungal),
Wendy Sheppard, and La Divina Pas-
tora parang group, along with the DJ
and steel orchestra. Closing the series
on December 19 will be Crazy (Edwin
Ayoung), Debbie Nahous (doing
selections from her 2010 CD), Fuego
Caribeno parang group, DJ Kern
Crosby and the host band.
The late Edwin Pouchet, leader
and musical director of Silver Stars
Steel Orchestra, was the person who
conceptualised the Parang & Steel
concerts back in 1991.
He was of the view that it would
be fantastic to be able to tell a visitor
to T&T that there was a nightspot
in the capital on Saturdays during
the yuletide season, that they could
visit and enjoy not only the "sounds
of the season" à la parang, but also
steelpan, the national musical instru-
ment of the twin-island Republic of
