Sire De Grugy wins a second Tingle Creek Chase but not without a little drama.
Former Champion Chase winner
Sire De Grugy (10/3) bounced back
to form to win a second Betfair Tingle
Creek Chase with the help of a judi-
cious leap at the last, yesterday.
The former Cheltenham hero was
given a reception worthy of a champion
after a courageous success which saw
him retain his unbeaten record over
fences at the track but connections had
to endure a nervous wait of around ten
minutes before the result was confirmed
after the stewards called an enquiry.
Special Tiara had adopted his cus-
tomary position at the head of affairs
but the race changed complexion when
the prominent Josses Hill took an awful,
crashing fall at the first fence on the

The eventual winner avoided the
trouble and went in pursuit of the Irish
raider while favourite Vibrato Valtat
and veteran Somersby were close on
Somersby lost momentum when get-
ting in too close to the last of the Rail-
way fences but Jamie Moore was still

He took the lead turning into the
straight but Special Tiara was soon
challenging again and went towards
the last only marginally behind.
Sire De Grugy jumped markedly to
his left at that obstacle, severely ham-
pering his rival who rallied gamely and
was only three parts of a length adrift
at the line.
The performance marked a return
to form from the nine-year-old who
had left connections bitterly disap-
pointed when only finishing fifth on
his reappearance at Exeter in the Haldon
Gold Cup behind Vibrato Valtat.
The win formed the final leg of a
389-1 treble for the winning trainer,
who was also successful with Ar Mad
(14--1) and Flute Bowl (5--1).
Winning rider Jamie Moore said: "It s
a lot of credit to the horse, the horse
hasn t got a routine any more. He tells
us what to do."
Referring to the last-fence incident,
he said: "He always jumps left, he s
jumped a bit left again at the last, I
thought Special Tiara was going to get
by me, but he s toughed it out. He went
again when Special Tiara got to me.
"This horse is my best mate."
Gary Moore said: "He has turned it
around quite a long way with Vibrato
Valtat and Somersby is well behind him
as well. He has put Devon behind him
and one or two runs last season. Hope-
fully he can progress from today. He
can be better than today.
"It was a write-off last season. The
only day he performed was when he
beat a horse called Grey Gold and he
made him look pretty average.
"Nine times out of ten he is on his
A game. People were quick to criticise
him and write him off, but I think he
has put it right today. I was pretty crit-
ical to myself that we gave him a hard
season when he won the Champion
Chase and I didn t know if it had taken
its toll on him, but he has put it right
today and it was very satisfying.
"When he schooled on Thursday his
old stride was back there and he was
brave at his fences and that s what he
hadn t been. When he jumped the ditch
the first time today he was positive at
"In my mind this ranks higher than
winning the Champion Chase. Every-
body seems to make Cheltenham the

me this is as good as winning at Chel-
He added: "It will either be the
Desert Orchid or the Clarence House
next. We will see how he comes out
today and if he needs a bit of time we
have got other horses for Kempton."
A disappointed De Bromhead said:
"He should have won, obviously he
was coming to win the race and the
other horse took him out, it was as
simple as that.
"I was delighted with his run, and
we will decide where we go next when
we get home."
Asked if he thought he would have
won, Special Tiara s rider Noel Fehily
said: "I thought so, at the time I was
coming with a real rattle to the last
and got turned sideways. That s rac-
