The "Golden Age"
of Hollywood was
roughly from 1927 to
1963---an era that s
often described as
timeless, classic and
such as Grace Kelly,
Marilyn Monroe, Lau-
ren Bacall, Katharine
Hepburn, Audrey Hep-
burn and Elizabeth
come to mind. We
can t help but conjure
up images of these
starlets on the red carpet, swishing by
in glamorous gowns and dripping with
Here s a look through the decades
for bridal inspiration:
1920s---The 1920s were all about
creating a long and lean silhouette on
women, so dropped-waist dresses were
in style. You can also opt for dresses
with illusion (sheer) necklines, many
layers of fringe, tiers, pleats or heavy
beading. Accessories can include jew-
eled sashes, beaded clutches, Mary-
Jane and T-strapped styled shoes, layers
of pearls, bridal headbands or fasci-
nators, bands worn across the forehead,
cloche (close-fitting hats) and any
accessories featuring ostrich feathers,
glitter, sequins and crystals.
1930s---Backless gowns in satin and
velvet were fashionable during the
1930s and they often featured flutter
sleeves. Peplums were introduced
towards the end of this decade. During
the 1930s, there was also the intro-
duction of simple veils, accompanied
by form-fitting bridal gowns.
gowns were trendy in
the 1940s, along with
matching suits, bolero
jackets, A-line and pen-
cil skirts. This type of
apparel was often paired
with slingback shoes,
d Orsay (closed heel and
toe, with open sides)
pumps and peep toe
pumps. Taffeta was
largely used as evening
gown fabric and sequins
on gowns were also at
their height of popular-
ity, to date.
After the World War, in the 1940s,
birdcage veils and half-crown head-
pieces, decorated with rhinestones and
wax flowers became popular.
1950s---During the 1950s, halter-
styled gowns were worn as well as tea-
length and swing dresses. Gowns dur-
ing this time were heavily influenced
by haute couture designers. Following
from the fashion at the time, the
emphasis was on form-fitting dresses,
sweetheart necklines, cinched waist-
lines and pearls and gloves to acces-
sorise. Snug skullcaps, featuring circular
veils, dominated the 1950s.
Whether your bridal gown will be
inspired by the flapper era of the 1920s
or the femininity of the 1950s, two
things to focus on with your bridal
fashion are a tailored fit and emphasis
on the waistline.
