sure to look good every
I do feel pressure but luckily
it's by my own standards. I
don't worry about the im-
possible standards that we
subject ourselves to. My late
grandmother was a fashion-
able woman and when I was
around 12 or 13 she im-
pressed upon me the need
to always look our best, even
if that was a casual best, be-
cause you never know who
you might meet that day.
Years later I realized she
knew what she was talking
about because it is so very
WOW: Who's your beauty
My mother, Marilyn Alfonso
--- she has killer cheekbones
for makeup and as long as I
can remember she has always looked "put to-
gether", even when she was ill and probably
didn't feel like it. She has always taken pride in
how she presents herself and has been a won-
derful example to her children. Halle Berry -- she's
just naturally beautiful, and she appreciates sub-
tle makeup styles that accentuate her natural
WOW: Do you have a beauty look that you
adore but would never attempt?
I love the look of eyelash extensions for a natural
effect. It really brings out a woman's eyes, even
with little makeup. But I would never attempt
this myself. There is no telling how long it would
take me to attempt this, and
where the eyelash would

WOW: How do you feel
about working with hair
and makeup artists versus
My DIY hair and makeup ef-
forts are good enough to get
me through a normal day.
But if I need the full "glam"
effect for special occasions
or photoshoots, then I rely
on professional hair and
makeup artists. They see things I do not, like
contours and shades. I'm always amazed at how
easy they make the entire process look.
WOW: Speaking of personal style, what have
you been drawn to this season?
The bohemian look is back. I also love the ethnic
prints on skirts. As for shoes (my other weak-
ness), ankle strap shoes are still my favourite.

I am inspired by products that sup-
port my dry, sensitive skin. I'm aller-
gic to many foods, medications and
other products, and the reactions
occur on my skin, so I prefer prod-
ucts that are specifically designed
for sensitive skin, or that are at least
oil and paraben free. Products that
target women of colour, especially
Caribbean women, with our many

WOW: If you only had five min-
utes to get ready for a night out,
what would your routine be?
Cleanse, moisturize, concealer, pow-
der, eyeliner, lipstick.
WOW: Fave products?
I love Physicians Formula eyeliner. It
goes on easy and it stays on -- no
running or smudging. I have used
the MAC brand, in particular the
Compact and Studio Fix for several
years. However, I am open to trying
new products. In terms of skin care,
I always carry around mini hand
creams that pop right into my bag.
WOW: If you had to choose to
have one beauty product, what
would you choose?
Still thinking ...!
WOW: Do you ever go to bed with-
out taking your make-up off?
No, never ever!

I like the feeling of clean and mois-
turized skin, so I rely on coconut oil
and wipes to remove make-up, es-
pecially eyeliner. I follow with the Oil
of Olay 4 in 1 facial cloths for sensi-
tive skin as it removes residual
makeup, cleans and tones. If I don't
have makeup on, I use Aveeno Clean

After experimenting with several
brand-name moisturizers, I am back
to Simple Anti-Blemish or Cetaphil
moisturizers. I use rosehip with Vi-
tamin E oil for under my eyes, espe-
cially at night. My morning/daytime
routine includes Oil-Free Neutro-
gena Age Shield SPF70 sunblock.
