Shypen has a strong, professional, feel
for the thirteen-runner Maiden Stakes
over seven furlongs of Lingfield polytrack
today, drawn twelve!
By now you are already aware of my
thought process but wait, both Charmy and
Broadway Icon are berthed close by and
none of their rivals has any chance, unless
one of two newcomers is a mystery waiting
On the time-handicap Broadway Icon
and Charmy are similar grade but Shypen
is advantaged by the 3lbs claim of Ryan
Powell who lost his apprentice allowance
earlier this week, when successful on our
8/1 winner, Threebagsue!
According to BHA rules Powell has a few
days grace in order to facilitate any
owners/trainers who wish to use his services
within the five-days declaration time having
This promises to be a cracker, but dis-
appointing that three two-year-olds we ve
been waiting for all turn up in the same
Over the same course and distance Many
Dreams is given yet another last chance in
the Nursery Handicap. There s a fine line
between loyalty and stupidity but Mark
Usher s charge has been knocking on the
door and there s every reason to believe it
will open, for Josephine Gordon!
This young lass has progressed consid-
erably for experience, Many Dreams has
performed best under Josephine and, of
course, she claims a 7lbs apprentice
Three days ago we took a chance with
Many Dreams in a well-contested maiden
but, not surprisingly, she wasn t able to land
a blow. Liam Keniry was sympathetic when
all chance had obviously gone and allowed
her to coast home.
This is a good chance to put the record
straight and I ll be having an each-way punt
at double-digit odds and, hopefully, cheering
Rest of this seven-race programme looks
difficult but Billy Bond might just round
off a record-breaking year for Richard Fahey
in the aged mile handicap under his stable
apprentice, Sammy Jo Bell!
Last race of 2015!
Shypen plans to upstage
Charmy and Broadway
Air Force Blue wins
the Dewhurst Stakes
under Ryan Moore.
Barry Murphy admits he has "big boots to
fill" after making a flying start to his training
career at Limerick over the festive period.
A son of multiple Grade One and Cheltenham
Festival-winning trainer Ferdy Murphy, Barry,
who spent a number of years assisting former
partner Liz Doyle, struck gold with just his third
runner as Pairofbrowneyes ran out a decisive
winner of the valuable Tim Duggan Memorial
Murphy said: "It was nice to get one on the
board so early, especially in a fairly big race.
"It s nice to have horse like him to start off
with and we did fancy him. All the lads that own
him had a good bet on him and there were plenty
of celebrations, I can
"What road we ll
go down now, I m not
sure. He s gone up
"We ll give him an
entry in the Leopard-
stown Chase on Jan-
uary 17 and see where
we are nearer the
time, but he s a pro-
gressive horse and I
think he ll be fairly
good if we just mind
him to a certain extent
for the rest of this
Murphy has a
string of nearly 30 horses in work at his County
Wexford base, but a number of those are likely
to be sold on in time.
"We ve got 28 horses riding out at the moment.
We ve a lot of nice, young horses from France
that we ll run in bumper and point-to-points
and then they ll be sold. That s just the way it
is and what you have to do to survive," said Mur-
"It s worked out well for us in the past with
the likes of Al Ferof and Cheltenian and hopefully
there s a few nice ones there.
"Hopefully we ll train a few winners as well,
though. It s all right in handicaps, but when you
get into the conditions and Graded races over
here and you ve got Willie (Mullins) and Gordon
(Elliott) banging in winners left, right and centre,
it s tough.
"I was with Liz for nine years, she was my
partner and we have two sons together, but things
didn t work out.
"I always wanted to go this way at some stage,
training in my own name, but the opportunity
never came along. When the situation changed,
I thought I d give it a go---nothing ventured,
nothing gained, as they say."
Ferdy Murphy, formerly one of the leading
trainers on the jumps circuit in northern England,
relocated to France two and a half years ago.
His son said: "My dad is in great form and I
think he s enjoying the French lifestyle, rather
than the hustle and bustle of training racehorses
over in Britain.
"He has 20-odd horses, just to keep him inter-
ested more than anything.
"I have big boots to fill, but we ll do our best."

Joseph O Brien is predicting big
things from last season s champion
juvenile Air Force Blue in 2016.
A winner of four of his five starts
at two for Aidan O Brien, with
O Brien jnr in the saddle for two of
them, his only defeat came behind
Buratino in the Coventry Stakes at
He later went on to turn that form
around in the Phoenix Stakes and
concluded a great first season with
a comfortable win in the Dewhurst
"Air Force Blue is an exceptional
horse; he has a lot of speed and class,"
said O Brien.
"He never looked like he was going
to be a two-year-old as he s such a
big horse, but he just got better and
better all year.
"He always worked well and really
improved when he got to the track,
every time. He was untouchable as
a two-year-old and he s turned into
a huge, big monster of a horse. He s
done really well and he s a very excit-
ing horse for next season. The 2000
Guineas is the plan."
Unusually the winter Derby
favourite does not hail from Bally-
doyle but there could be some nice
"With regards to the Derby, we ve
a number of nice Galileos that all
ran very well in big races," said
"We ve Johannes Vermeer who
won the Group One in the France
(Criterium International) and we ve
a horse out of Remember When,
Beacon Rock, who ran very well a
couple of times.
"We also have a couple of nice
Galileos that haven t run and we ve
a nice horse that was just beat in a
maiden at Leopardstown towards the
end of the season. So we have some
nice horses that may be a little bit
under the radar hopefully. Galileo is
probably the best sire ever and you
could never have enough of them.
"Air Force Blue is the main one
for the mile, mile-and- a-quarter
campaign but we have others who
might be under the radar."
Big things expected from Blue in 2016
