Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi
is creating bacchanal and politicis-
ing the office of the Attorney Gen-
This was the response from former
attorney general Garvin Nicholas in
response to allegations made by Al-
Rawi who claimed to have discovered
some "19 ghost employees" at the
AG s office.
The allegations were made during
the debate on the Finance Bill in the
Parliament on Monday. Al-Rawi also
referred to a list of employees with
Al-Rawi had further explained
that none of the employees produced
their credentials when called upon
to do so, adding that most of those
being paid were linked to the Legal
The AG has also charged that was
corruption and mismanagement.
Nicholas, who denied having
knowledge of the allegations, called
on Al-Rawi to produce the evidence.
"If he has real information about
this he needs to make it very clear
and not create speculation," Nicholas
He said Al-Rawi should also con-
sult with the human resource and
finance directors at the AG s office
to gather proper information as to
whether those people really exist-
"Instead of trying to create bac-
chanal, the Attorney General should
get on with the business of the coun-
try instead of looking to create chaos.
"In the four-and-a-half months
that this attorney general has been
in office he has done little to bring
this country and its citizens forward,"
Saying T&T faces serious issues,
including that of terrorism, both
locally and internationally, the former
AG said that needed urgent atten-
"I would like to see what this AG
is doing with these issues. In the
first five months I was AG I managed
to pilot a number of pieces of leg-
islation and deal with a number of
issues while also trying to balance
the workings of the AG s ministry,"
He said the mandate of any AG
was to create policy.
However, former attorney general
Anand Ramlogan is preferring to
remain mum on the matter.
Contacted yesterday Ramlogan
offered no comment.
Pressed further for a comment,
the former AG insisted he had noth-
ing to say.
Russel Thomas, the man who ran out of the San
Fernando Magistrates Court on Monday after being
sentenced to three years in jail for armed robbery,
was taken straight to jail yesterday after surrendering
Thomas, 27, surrendered to officers of the Besson
Street Police Station around 7.30 am yesterday.
He is expected to be charged with escaping lawful
custody and to be served with warrants for the sen-
tencing on which he ran out.
Thomas was taken straight to the Golden Grove
Prison, Arouca, to begin serving his three-year term.
He will be brought before a San Fernando magistrate
on an unknown date to have the escaping charge
read to him.
The San Juan man and his twin brother, Roston,
were both sentenced to three years in jail by Magistrate
Margaret Alert after they were found guilty of armed
robbery in 2012.
They were charged with robbing an elderly man
at gunpoint of a gold chain and a gold bracelet.
When the matter was called shortly after 1 pm on
Monday and Alert ordered the sentence, both men
began protesting loudly.
Policemen from the Court and Process Branch
moved in to place handcuffs and take the pair into
custody but Roston began resisting.
While the officers attention was occupied, Russel
ran out of the courtroom and out of the building.
