Tom Scudamore reached 1,000 winners under
Rules with victory on Impulsive American in the
racinguk.com/anywhere Maiden Hurdle at Mus-
He enjoyed a smooth success on the David Pipe-
trained four-year-old, on what was his only ride of
the day. Coming with a strong challenge from two
out, Impulsive American (evens favourite) took the
lead after jumping the last and went on to score by
eight lengths from Some Are Lucky.
It was Scudamore s 990th win over jumps with
his four-figure tally made up of successes on the
Flat. He follows in the footsteps as such icons of
jump racing in Sir Tony McCoy, Richard Johnson,
Richard Dunwoody, John Francome and Stan Mel-
lor.He also makes history by being the first to emulate
his father, Peter Scudamore, who was champion
jockey eight times and with a career total of 1,678.
Both have been based Pond House Stables, Peter
riding for Martin Pipe and Tom for his son, David.
"I was told a few weeks ago when I was at Pond
House that I was getting very close to 1,000 winners
and from then on I ve been aware of it," Tom Scu-
damore told Racing UK. "It s something that s very
"When you set off on our career the first thing
you want to do is to ride one winner and go from
there. The names of those who have ridden 1,000
winners is just phenomenal.
"I ve been very fortunate with the people I ve
ridden for. The one biggest highlight would be winning
on Next Sensation at the Cheltenham Festival for
my brother, Michael (trainer).
"I think whatever I achieve in the future will never
match that. To ride a winner for my brother there
owned by some very close family friends---it means
an awful lot.
"Every winner has meant something in some way,
but that meant a bit more."
Scudamore senior said: "How lucky we ve been
to have Martin Pipe behind us.
"When you look at jockeys like Stan Mellor and
John Francome, who have ridden 1,000 winners, it s
a very special club.
"To be champion jockey is fantastic, but to join
the 1,000 winners club, which Andrew Thornton is
trying to do now, is a mark of having done some-
Faugheen out of Champion Hurdle
Willie Mullins expects Faugheen to return "as good
as new" next season following the shock news he
will not defend his title in the Stan James Champion
Hurdle at Cheltenham.
The eight-year-old was a brilliant winner of the
showpiece event on the opening day of last year s
Festival and while he suffered a surprise defeat at
the hands of stable companion Nichols Canyon on
his seasonal reappearance in the Morgiana Hurdle at
Punchestown, he bounced back with a second win
in Kempton s Christmas Hurdle.
That was followed by a scintillating performance
in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown last
month. He was odds-on across the board to strike
gold once more at Prestbury Park next month, but
will have to watch on from the sidelines after suffering
a suspensory ligament injury, with Mullins deciding
to draw stumps for the campaign.
O'Neill keen on More of That
Jonjo O Neill feels a peak-form More Of That is
the one to beat in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham.
The Jackdaws Castle trainer admits he was tempted
to enter the JP McManus-owned eight-year-old for
the Timico Gold Cup but is happy to wait another
season to have a crack at the blue riband.
More Of That, winner of the Ladbrokes World
Hurdle in 2014, has won both of his two starts over
fences at Cheltenham and O Neill is just hoping for
decent ground come March 16.
Bernie s Boy shouldn t be qualified for
the Maiden Stakes over a mile of Chelms-
ford polytrack tonight; fancy trainer Andrew
Balding not being able to find an easy
opportunity for a three-year-old rated above
80!It would be like meat and drink for yours
truly. Placing is the name of the game, Bernie s
Boy has contested much better races and,
three times from six races, been involved in
photo finishes. It s high time he won and my
time-handicap ratings suggests this really
should be a penalty-kick, if he stays the
On several occasions Bernie s Boy has
looked certain to prevail only to flounder in
the closing stages and snatch defeat from
the jaws of victory, so to speak.
Rivers Of Asia can t be discounted and
several others will be on the premises which
means Bernie s Boy will not constitute value
at the forecast price of even money; unless
2/1 is available don t bother.
Incidentally Bernie s Boy was also entered
for a maiden at Lingfield on Friday, a much
easier course, ideally suited to this Lilbourne
Boy colt. As a consequence of his absence
we will give you the winner of that race!
We like betting on Balding runners, they
are always fit and fully exposed, 100 per cent
triers without doubt, but how could he prefer
this task to the other?
Over the same course and distance Lim-
erick Lord comes out best-in for an aged
handicap and is advantaged by 3lbs apprentice
allowance of Shelley Birkett.
Given the fierce competition out there
Shelley has matured into a competent jockey
by working hard and gaining experience; it
hasn t happened overnight but after watching
her score aboard Lifting Me Higher at South-
well, Tuesday, I ve no qualms about making
her mounts selections when the time comes.
There are several female jockeys who can t
be distinguished from their male rivals, Ms
Birkett, Cathy Gannon and Josephine Gordon
are equal to the task and dedication is being
rewarded. It s a hard game but they are tough
So many girls think it s a glamour trade,
that couldn t be further from the truth; there
are no short cuts to success and that s why
Hayley Turner impressed down the years.
None has been better and she set a high
standard which, thankfully, is being main-
Incidentally there are two eight-runner
races, expect a couple of non-runners because
bookmakers will happily pay to get one out;
you ve got to hate them!
Ninety-four horses have
taken entry for Day Six of the
Arima Race Club s Day racing
season. The day will have
eight races competitive races
on the card. When entries
were received yesterday the
feature event---The Grade
One---$100,000 First Sprint
over 1,200 metres on the main
track. This race has attracted
a field of eight headed by John
O Brien trained Takeoneforjoey.
O Brien has a three pronged
attack in the event with Mint
Condition and Desert Dancer.
Kerron Khelawan will be
aboard Takeoneforjoey, while
Mint Condition will have the
assistance of the in-form
Ronald Ali. Former Champion
jockey Brian Boodramsing will
ride Desert Dancer.
However, the event looks
very competitive with Anthony
Nunes pair of Academy Award
and Reggae Rhythm set to go
well. The former looks like the
flag-bearer and could upset
Trainer Shaffique Khan is
also double-handed in the
event and could upset the prin-
cipals with Dunkirk Express
and Minewalker which will be
ridden by Patrick Husbands.
Post time for the first event on
Saturday is 1 pm. Here are
