The trio of Nicholas Paul of Club Breakaway, Jabari
Whiteman (Southclaine) and Teniel Campbell of Team
Bike Smith dominated Sunday s Endurance Night of
the Track Championship at the Arima Velodrome.
Following on the heels of their achievements the day
before in which Paul won the Match Sprint among the
Juniors, Campbell claimed the Elite Ladies 2-Lap event
and Whiteman was second in the Junior Match Sprint,
Paul and Whiteman bettered all expectations as juniors
by finishing closely behind senior sprint ace Quincy
Alexander in the final of the Keirin.
Campbell dominated all the events in which she com-
peted, taking the Points Race, Scratch Race and Elim-
ination event on Sunday.
The keirin came down to a showdown among the
three fastest in the Flying 200 metres, but there was no
beating Alexander. The Team DPS rider got the edge on
his rivals in a mad dash to the finish, beating Paul by
less than the width of a wheel. Whiteman who posted
11.98 seconds which was the second fastest as a junior,
was third in the keirin and not too far off the
His time was the fifth fastest overall as he
and Paul successfully posted better times than
their senior counterparts.
Campbell made light work in the keirin,
disposing of Aziza Browne who was second
for Arima Wheelers and Cheyene Awai of Team
Breakaway, in third. Kollyn St George (Break-
away) and Keiana Lester of Bike Smith who
were injured in a spill on Saturday, did not
take part. She later triumphed in the 8-Lap
Elite and Junior Ladies race ahead of Awai and
third Jodi Goodridge of Arima Wheelers.
Campbell, one of the rising talents for T&T,
also dominated the Elite and Junior Elimination
race ahead of Farah and Browne and later in
the 10-Lap Points race which saw Farah again
taking silver and Awai bronze.
Kwesi Browne, who was expected to be on
a professional contract with the Pennsylvania
Lightning in the World Cycling League from
March 18-19 in California, USA, showed his
class in the Elite 1, 2 and Invitational 33-Lap
race by snatching the gold. He was followed
in second by Varun Maharajh with Whiteman
and Justin Roberts completing the top four
finishers. Browne also earned large sums of
money from primes that were being offered
for various laps. However, with one lap to go
Sei Daniel (Arima Wheelers) rushed over the
top, leading out his teammate Browne. By the
time Daniel opened, his lead out gave Browne
a sizeable lead on a panicking peloton who
were frantically trying to bridge the gap. As
they came to the line, it was a neck and neck
sprint between Browne and Maharajh (Rigtech
Sonics), but Browne did enough to hold off
his counterpart. Whiteman was once again in
the mix, placing third.
Cyril Fook (PSL) took the Masters Open
Points Race in a well-controlled event, finishing
a comfortable 10 points ahead of his closest
competitor in Michael Brown (PSL) and Cecil
Hackett (Chain Lynxs).
