Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : February 25th 2016 Contents Prince to rule in the four-runner Maiden
Stakes over a mile of Lingfield polytrack
today, he ll be a good price with two well-
bred sorts from fashionable yards bound
to dominate betting exchanges.
Price to chance comes into play, Pearly
Prince will be at least 5/1 and yet has much
better last time time-handicap mark than
either once-raced Sarmadee, from Mick
Channon s yard, or James Fanshawe-trained
Esteemable, attempting to make it third
time lucky but absent for 185 days.
Nigh on five weeks ago Pearly Prince was
blinkered over course and distance in a fast-
run race won by Sea Of Flames. A tardy
start compromised any real chance, but this
Cockney Rebel gelding made progress in
the closing stages to finish about seven
lengths behind the winner which carried
20lbs less in respect of weight-for-age.
Over middle distance three-year-olds
have a distinct advantage, 9st 12lbs repre-
sents a dead lump, especially following a
slow start. Both Sarmadee and Esteemable
might improve considerably but, there again,
why shouldn t Pearly Prince, again the
mount of Rav Havlin whose all-weather
riding record bears close inspection?
Hopefully veteran trainer Peter Hedger
issues positive instructions. Pearly Prince
will be difficult to catch if he hits the gate
and gets into rhythm.
Whenever one selects a fancy ridden by
Rav my last car springs to mind, a RAV 4!
Intimately is thrown-in a seven-runner
three-year-old handicap over six furlongs,
judged on his two runs on Kempton poly
back in the Autumn.
As a result of several below-par efforts
on different surfaces since Intimately has
been dropped by the handicapper. Three
weeks ago this Intense Focus gelding ran
much better, back on polytrack!
That s significant and so is the booking
of Richard Kingscote, computer champion
jockey last season and a joy to watch as he
thinks his way into contention.
Richard suffered horrendous injuries in
an accident at Wolverhampton in 2014 but
has recovered. Definitely a jockey to follow.
No wonder ex-International footballer,
Michael Owen, is adamant Kingo stays at
his complex with Tom Dascombe.

Fire brigade hoping
for kind draw
The durable Fire Fighting's chances in the Coral
Winter Derby at Lingfield on Saturday rest with
getting a low draw, his connections believe.
Mark Johnston ran the five-year-old 25 times in
2015, with arguably his most impressive display
coming in his final outing at Kempton when winning
a Listed race by two and a quarter lengths.
Saturday will be his first run since that effort in
November, which represents the first real break he
has had since the end of his juvenile season.
"He probably deserved a bit of a break to be fair!"
said Mike Spence, son of owner Alan Spence.
"Last winter he never got one at all, even though
he didn't run for two months before Meydan he was
still in training and only actually had one day off.
"This time he's had a proper break. We were hop-
ing he would get invited to Qatar, but he didn't and
this race was always back up.
"Of all the all-weather tracks Lingfield suits him
the least to be honest, as it's a sharp bend and he's
a real galloper.
"We'll know our fate at the draw, I think, he'll need
to be low to stand a chance."
Felix set for
Willie Mullins is set to let Felix Yonger take his
chance alongside stablemate Un De Sceaux in the
Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Ireland's champion trainer had suggested that the
Graham Wylie-owned ten-year-old could go to
Japan for the Nakayama Grand Jump in Tokyo, but
that won't be happening this year with a run on the
second day of the Cheltenham Festival now pen-
Un De Sceaux is odds-on across the board for the
Champion Chase following an excellent win at
Ascot on his latest start, but Felix Yonger looks a
solid second string for the Closutton handler follow-
ing two Grade Two victories on his last two starts.
Mullins told At The Races: "It looks like we'll let
him take his chance (in the Champion Chase).
Maybe he could go there (to Japan) next year.
The Star Turn
California Chrome, runner-up in the Dubai World
Cup last year, makes his eagerly-awaited reappear-
ance in the Trans Gulf Electromechanical Trophy at
Unusually for a horse of his class he is running in
a handicap, giving away upwards of a stone away to
his seven rivals in the dirt event.
The plan was for California Chrome to run at
Royal Ascot in June but heartbreakingly for connec-
tions he picked up a foot abscess before the Prince
of Wales's Stakes.
His future had been in some doubt but he re-
turned to win at Santa Anita in June and is the
headline act as the Carnival moves towards "Super
Saturday" on March 5.
"He is a bigger and stronger horse this year," said
assistant Alan Sherman, who is son of trainer, Art.
"He has done everything we have asked of him
and we are very pleased with his preparations.
"We decided to run this week rather than on
Super Saturday to give him a month between races
before the World Cup.
"We could not be happier with him and are really
excited about having another crack at the Dubai
Victor Espinoza has been the man on board for
most of his wins, including the Kentucky Derby, and
he said: "He is carrying a lot of weight.
"He is carrying 15-20lb more than any other horse
in the race but other than that he is in good shape."

Triple Crown favourite The
Gatsby returns to racing in the
feature Infallibility Stakes event
over 1,350 metres on the main
track at Santa Rosa Park,
Arima, on Saturday.
The Gatsby, which was ranked
top juvenile 2015 at the Jetsam
Awards, will try to enhance his
already bulging reputation when
he takes on six rivals in the fea-
ture event worth $150,000.
The Merlin Samlalsingh-
Jamaican bred colt has been
hugely impressive in winning by
wide margins in all starts.
In this event, he looks unbeat-
able and champion jockey
Prayven Badrie will only have a
steering job in the main event.
Other in the race include the John
O Brien-trained duo Magical
Victory and Crown The King.
Also entered is Newthinginthong,
the St Ann s Stakes winner.
Ninety-nine horses are entered
in the ten-race card.
Here are the entries for the
ARC Day Seven programme.
