Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : February 25th 2016 Contents is the place for you.
By now, I imagine you are ready to sign up
and become an Alta volunteer tutor and you
are in luck because we are currently recruiting
tutors for September 2016.
Alta requires only a Grade 1 or 2 in CSEC
English General Proficiency (or equivalent)
and your commitment to teach twice a week
for two hours per session for the academic
year following your training (September 2016-
Providing that you can commit, call Alta
now for an interview at 624-2582. After you
call us, call a friend who you think may be
interested and encourage them to call us too!
After your interview, once it is clear that you
can commit and that Alta is a match for you,
you will have to observe and assist at eight
Alta classes at a venue convenient for you,
so you can see how it s done.
By that time, you would have "wet your
feet" and would be ready for the six-day Alta
Tutor-Training course which takes place in
April and May. Volunteers are trained in teach-
ing literacy skills and team teaching. The col-
laborative environment is a good time to ask

Since 1992, Alta has successfully shared the skills
of reading and writing with over 10,000 T&T
nationals, as well as with people of other nation-
alities who have settled in our country.
Our impact survey, done in 2012, showed that
Alta had instigated great positive change in the lives
of its students over the years. Our impact survey also
showed that 52 per cent
of our students, who
attended Alta classes
from 2001-2011, indi-
cated that their experi-
ence at Alta had led to
an increase in their
salary. Many others spoke of improved confidence
levels, better jobs and an ability to read to their
children and assist with homework. These were things
many of our students were not able to do before
Undoubtedly, it has been commitment from our
tutors which has ensured that Alta can continue
changing the lives of our students. If you would like
to change a life by sharing the skill of reading with
someone, Alta is the place for you.
About 25 per cent of the adult population in this
country struggle with reading and writing. This makes
tasks many of us take for granted like filling out a
form or reading instructions on a medicine bottle
quite difficult. If you would like to change that, Alta
William Shatner reflects on the death of Leonard
Nimoy and their tumultuous friendship that began
when both were cast on the original Star Trek TV
show in Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship With
a Remarkable Man.
This isn t a straightforward biography of Nimoy,
though it does cover the elements that showcase his
early life, his career highlights and what made him
such a beloved person both on the screen and in real
Instead, Shatner parallels Nimoy s life with his
own and how they were eerily similar up to the point
where they were hired as Captain Kirk and Mr Spock
in 1966. The end result is that this becomes Shatner s
story as well.
Shatner is blunt and honest when he talks about
their friendship. They were like siblings who shared
a deep love and respect, but also had issues expressing
their frustrations with each other. The resulting rela-
tionship was both rewarding and challenging.
When life threw curveballs, they were there for
each other, just as they were for their successes.
Shatner doesn t hold back when it comes to
demonstrating Nimoy s love and compassion for his
family and friends. He also is quite forthcoming with
Nimoy s personal demons, including his battle with
alcoholism and near estrangement from his wife and
