Home' Trinidad and Tobago Guardian : April 7th 2016 Contents Hakam has been placed to make it third
time lucky in an aged Maiden Stakes over
a mile of Chelmsford polytrack tonight.
Earlier a wonderful first day of the Aintree
Grand National meeting is generating
tremendous excitement and anticipation.
Nichols Canyon and Dejakadam are our
strong fancies for high-profile grade one
It s all about winning, finding the best
opportunities for serious punting; all three
appeal strongly, Hakam is napped, which
is not surprising given he was once fancied
for the English 2000 Guineas last year by
trainer Charles Hills!
There is no doubt Hamdan Al Maktoum-
owned Hakam should have won his second
start at Newmarket, injudiciously ridden,
what s new?
On his other start Hakam was beaten a
short-head by Ventriloquist at Lingfield,
unlucky, should have won. Poor devil has
paid the ultimate price for failure, he s now
a War Front gelding!
Although we haven t seen him out 378
days Hakam has been working really well
but wont be favourite because 88-rated,
John Gosden-trained, Hermitage Bay
attempts to get off the mark at the fourth
Hermitage Bay will carry 15lbs less than
4-y-o Hakam, due to the weight-for-age
scale. According to my computation the
former is vastly over-rated. Others have no
chance whatsoever unless there s a mystery
lurking and so let your bookie know you
Nichols Canyon was third to four and a
half lengths winner, Annie Power, in the
Champion Hurdle over two miles last
month. Also a head in front, for second,
was My Tent Or Yours. We expect Willie
Mullins charge to reverse placings over an
extra four furlongs in the Aintree Hurdle,
which should suit him ideally.
An early mistake "did" for Nichols Canyon
on Prestbury Park where Annie Power set
a strong pace under Ruby Walsh. They never
looked in danger.
Annie could well be suited by the trip
but My Tent Or Yours has no pretensions
of getting further than this nine-year-old
has ever raced. The New One was fourth,
another better at the minimum trip and no
chance, if Nichols Canyon hits his best
mark. Djakadam was runner-up to Don
Cossack in the Gold Cup, if you recall Cue
Card was reckoned unlucky; jumpers fall
for a reason!
They meet again in the Betfred Bowl
Chase; do you honestly believe Mullins
would take Cue Card on again if he believed
what so many scribes proffered as profes-
sional opinions? All selections are excellent
price to chance propositions which should
make the frame(s), by default, and we re
aiming for places, as ever. Looking forward
to this weekend, immensely.

Cookie grounded by Frosty Berry
Frosty Berry transferred her smart all-weather
form to the turf when causing a 50/1 surprise in the
totepool EBF Stallions Barry Hills Further Flight
Stakes at Nottingham.
The seven-year-old answered every question asked
by Shane Gray to floor odds-on favourite Clever
Cookie in the Listed contest. Nearly Caught took the
field along for much of the one-mile-six-furlong event
before the Peter Niven-trained Clever Cookie breezed
into the lead approaching the two-furlong pole.
Although he travelled well enough, last year's King
George fourth could not shake off the attentions of
the Ed de Giles-trained Frosty Berry, who scored by a
De Giles told Racing UK: "We have come here for
one reason---to get black type.
"We ran her at Lingfield and the track didn't suit
her and the way it was run it didn't suit her.
"She is a fit horse and had conditions to suit. She is
in incredibly good order. We had to go give it a crack.
We could have gone to Southwell (on Thursday) for a
handicap and this has increased her value no end.
"I've won five races with her so I've probably done
my job with her and we probably should go breed
"We had to come here with the ground like this as
we will probably never get another opportunity."
Burke big chance for Sizing John
Views from connections ahead of the Merseyrail
Manifesto Novices' Chase at Aintree today.
Leading jockey Johnny Burke challenged Sizing
John to "step up to the plate" in the Merseyrail Mani-
festo Novices' Chase at Aintree today.
The Henry de Bromhead-trained six-year-old was
once again left trailing in Douvan's wake when run-
ner-up in the Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festi-
val. And in order to avoid another clash, Sizing John
tests the water over two and a half miles for the first
time in the opening race of the three-day Grand Na-
tional meeting on Merseyside.
"I'm glad we don't have to worry about Douvan this
time and I'm looking forward to it," said Burke.
"We're going into new territory over the extra half a
mile, but he gives you the impression he'll stay. You
never really know until you try, but if you could pick
somewhere to give it a go Aintree would be the place.
"Hopefully we can get into a good rhythm and it
would be great for Sizing John if he could win it. If it
wasn't for Douvan he'd be a great horse.
"He has to go and win his Grade One now. Hope-
fully he can step up to the plate."
Sizing John features in an eight-strong field that in-
cludes JLT Novices' Chase third L'Ami Serge and
Garde La Victoire, a faller when well fancied for the
same event three weeks ago.
His trainer Philip Hobbs told At The Races: "It's an
open race but he must have a really good chance."
'Surprise package' Ucello all set
There will be some equine sibling rivalry when half-
brothers Silviniaco Conti and Ucello Conti line up in
the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
While Silviniaco Conti, a ten-year-old trained by
Paul Nicholls, is well known on these shores thanks to
his long list of successes, Ucello Conti is an unknown
Formerly trained in France by Guillaume Macaire,
the eight-year-old has had three runs since being
switched to Gordon Elliott's yard in County Meath.
Ucello Conti has earned his place in the National,
which Elliott won with Silver Birch in 2007, thanks to
two excellent placed efforts in the Paddy Power
Handicap Chase at Leopardstown and the Thyestes
Chase at Gowran.
Anthony Bromley, racing manager to owners
Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, said: "Simon owned
him in France. He was a smart three- and four-year-
old over hurdles and fences for Guillaume Macaire.
"He lost his way and became disappointing, and the
last roll of the dice was to go to see if Gordon Elliott
could rekindle him a bit. Gordon had him over a year
before he got him on the track.
"He's been a bit of a surprise package. He's come
back to his good form as a youngster and has run two
great races in Ireland's two biggest handicaps this
Champion juvenile filly of
2014 Blue Tequilla, which was
injured in her quest for Triple
Crown glory the following year,
will make her long-awaited
reappearance on Saturday---
Day 12 of the Arima Race Club
(ARC) racing season. The
unbeaten Anthony Nunes-
trained filly has been allotted
54.5 kilos for the feature event
on the day s programme over
Should Blue Tequilla be 90
per cent ready she could well
walk into the winner s enclosure
with Kerron Khelawan aboard.
However, this event which has
attracted 13 entrants and looks
a very competitive affair and
with the likes of Bergeron Boy,
Masterpiece, Swept Away and
derby winner Momentum drop-
ping in grade, this could be a
tough one to win.
When entries were taken for
the eight race card and total of
85 horses took entry for the 13
round of the ARC racing season.
Post time is 1 pm.
