Vishwanath "Joy" Sawh became the first Trinida-
dian to have a street named after him in the state
of Florida in the United States.
Sawh, a philanthropist and simple man from
south Trinidad, made his mark in the West Indian
community of Lauderhill, Florida, following his
entry into the world of business in the US in 1992.
A ceremony to name the street took place at the
Lauderhill Mall carpark where several dignitaries
including United States Senator Christopher Smith,
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and
Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan spoke.
Glowing tribute came from Senator Smith who
said Sawh not only contributed to the economy of
the US, but also to the development of the com-
munity in which he lived.
He said: "During this political season you hear
all the politicians say how small businesses grow
the economy, but Joy was an example of how small
businesses grow our community. Because for many
years, he did not have his business here to enrich
himself, but he had his business here to enrich the
He did not run his business to prosper himself,
but he ran his business to prosper the community.
Not only did he feed us with sustenance, but he
fed our souls and he fed our hearts through all the
hard work that he has done."
Sawh, who migrated with his family during the
height of the recession in 1988, opened the popular
Joy s Roti Delight in South Florida in 1992. Sawh
died in 2014 at the age of 61.
Sawh s nephew Anil Maharaj delivered the feature
address to the hundreds gathered at the Lauderhill
Giving a brief history of Sawh, Maharaj said Sawh
married the love of his life, Paramdaye "Sheila"
Gowkaran Garibdass, at the age of 23 in 1975 and
shared a home at Bonne Aventure, Gasparillo.
The couple later had their first son, Pradeep, and
one year later, their next son, Dave, was born. In
1979 Sawh moved his family to Mora Dam, Syne
Farming and land cultivation became their liveli-
hood. When the recession started in the 1980s the
family entered into a small clothing business that
later proved unsuccessful.
Sawh took the decision to move to the US. Both
Sawh and his wife worked as janitors, delivering
newspapers, and doing odd jobs to make ends meet
in the US.
Maharaj said on Valentine s Day, 1992, the doors
of Joy s Roti Delight was opened.
He said: "His long-awaited American dream was
about to start. The principles of his business was
the character of the little giant. Honesty, simplicity,
passion, modesty, family oriented, straightforward-
ness, sincerity, authenticity, words are not enough
to describe...but only Uncle Joy could come up with
a description that summed it all up.
"This would become the slogan for Joy s Roti,
Home Away from Home. The secret ingredient for
the great taste in Joy s Roti Delight was, yes, love.
From the time you opened the door to the roti shop
it is like you were opening up his heart. You have
all experienced what I am referring to and you would
agree with me that there are not enough words in
any language that can describe that feeling.
"Uncle Joy may have passed on, but he left us
all with fun and fond memories. Every moment
spent with Uncle Joy was a significant one. If every-
one here is allowed to share their moments with
