SAO PAULO --- Acting Brazilian President Michel
Temer has picked a congressman being investi-
gated by the Supreme Court on an attempted
murder allegation to be the government s new
leader in the lower house Chamber of Deputies.
Congressman Andre Moura, of the conservative
Social Christian Party, is also being investigated
for alleged involvement in the corruption-kickback
scheme at state-owned oil company Petrobras.
Moura told reporters yesterday that the attempt-
ed murder accusations against him are unfounded
and made by a political rival in the state of Sergipe
to ruin his career. He also denied any involvement
in the corruption at Petrobras.
Prosecutors say more than $2 billion was paid
in bribes and other funds by Brazil s biggest con-
struction and engineering firms in exchange for
inflated Petrobras contracts. (AP)
WASHINGTON --- Donald Trump is within 76 del-
egates of clinching the Republican nomination for
president with his win in the Oregon primary.
With no one else left in the race, the only question
is which state will put him over the top. He might
have to wait until June 7, the last day for primaries.
The New York billionaire has won at least 18 del-
egates in Oregon, though there were significant votes
for candidates who have quit the race. Ohio Gov. John
Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won at least four
delegates apiece. There are two delegates left to be
Oregon allocates delegates in proportion to the
statewide vote, so anyone getting more than 3.5 per
cent of the vote gets delegates.
Trump has 1,161 delegates. It takes 1,237 to win.
MOSCOW --- Police in Moscow say a man who took
hostages during an attempt to rob a bank was killed
Police spokeswoman Sofia Khotina said on state TV
news channel Rossiya-24 that the man was "liquidated"
during an operation by special forces, but didn t give
None of the six hostages were reported injured. Five
of them were freed before the police operation. The
other was a cashier who had taken shelter in a secure
room of the bank.
News reports said the man, wearing a mask, entered
the Credit Bank of Moscow branch brandishing what
appeared to be a pistol.
After most of the hostages left, the man reportedly
demanded a large sum of money and threatened to set
off a bomb. After he was killed, police were examining
whether a device that he held was an explosive. (AP)
